Journal jawtheshark's Journal: Do you want to slashdot willekens.lu? 32

willekens.lu never got much more than 30KByte/s downstream. I never managed to measure upstream. They should have a 1024kbps/128kbps DSL line, but there must be something wrong.

However, my parents server is called "willekens.lu" (.lu domains are fucking expensive). Many springs ago I setup the possibility for all users to use their public_html directory in their home on the server. Not many people used it. However, today, my sister brushed up her html skills:

Many pictures of my wedding

Yeah, they are not edited... It's just the "raw" material. There are many other pictures, and I'll try to make a nice compilation... But for those that can't wait (but do have patience while the pics load) it's the best I can offer. After all, it's been last Saturday and we're Tuesday by now. :-)
(Note: I didn't see them myself... I got bored by the slow loading times. I'll just take an empty CD to my parents *grin*)

Do you want to slashdot willekens.lu?

  • Damn, that took 4-eva.

Throw them up on ImageShack and I'd love to take a look.

    This is painful.
  • Picture 121 is a good group shot. (I don't know how it compares to others, because I'm not quite crazy enough to have randomly clicked on more than 3. :^)

Congratulations on having all the wedding stuff behind you. Now the fun begins. :^P
  • Lemme know when the mirrors are available.
    Dear Lord.
    • It is evident that I need to make a web-friendly version. I mean: who uses 1.5Meg images and that on a DSL line that doesn't deliver the promised speeds. It's just that my sister did this quickly, and I can't do it right now. None of my machines is in a situation where I can do image editing. So first I need to have some time for me and my computers. The problem is: my dear one already planified pretty much all of my time in the next two weeks. Then it's pretty much time to go on the honeymoon. Earli

      • You know, there`s a winsucks tool called ThumbnailFactory. It`s free, and within minutes it creates thumbnail images for your website. I thought of suggesting it to your sister but she`s apparently busy with.. her.. eh.. thesis *cough* music *cough*..

Anyway.. great party, Jorg, I enjoyed it!

        • Personally, I swear by gallery [menalto.com] which is also free. Quick and easy and non-techies can use it easily too. No need to run a script or anything like that.

In other news, there has to be a story behind the bridesmaid with a sling....

        • Sissy got a lot to do in the next weeks. Today they are in Brussels, I think: moving her stuff back to Luxembourg. She also brings with her (actually, mine... but whatever) AMD XP 2400+, so she'll have more power available to do stuff like this. Still, I don't know how much works she has to do for her thesis.

Anyway.. great party, Jorg, I enjoyed it!

Thanks: glad you were there :-))

      • The problem is: my dear one already planified pretty much all of my time in the next two weeks.

News flash: She's got more than the next two weeks planned, hombre. Anyway, what I saw looks like folks had a good time, which is what matters.

Uh-Oh... gotta have know that it didn't stop after that party thingy ;-))

Well, she'll damn well plan in some quality time for me and my computers or I'm going to end up in a psychiatric institution :-)

Anyway, what I saw looks like folks had a good time, which is what matters.

          Exactly

  • I found this one [willekens.lu] especially intriguing. What's the story behind it? ;-)
    • Well, my mother in law, her youngest son (the young man with the tie on the picture) and probably also one of the single uncles organized a big "present" full of "gag" articles and some with "subtle" hints.

Now, the fact that I end up with the diapers (not so subtle hint from a wannabe-grandma) and SmilingGirl ends up with the beer is just pure coincidence. Surely could have gone the other way around, but that would have made a less good picture.

Other articles found in the box were (on top of my head,

      • Hehe...

And here I am thinking it's some kind of sick inside joke about drinking too much beer and needing diapers due to beer bladder or something equally warped :-P

        • Yeah, that is truly warped.... Especially I'm the kind of guy that can control his bladder like noone else I have met before.... even after drinking tons of beer. It just stays inside, doesn't come out either way... (if you know what I mean)
  • You should definitely shrink those by at least 50%. As it is, they don't look their best on my iPAQ... :)

    • Yes, I know... That's what I would have done. Except I have trained my family not to edit pictures that come from the digital camera in order to avoid quality loss. (Sister didn't listen: she clearly rotated some pictures - I hope we still have the originals) The reason for this is if they want to develop the photos the highest quality is needed. (Actually 2MBit suffices, but let's not get into that discussion)

I just fear that they save the pics over the original file, and thus lose the original. I'm

      • I think that for basic processing tasks (colour correction, red-eye removal), saving over the original JPEG is just about Ok, provided you stick to a high quality setting.

Speaking of digital cameras, I can take the CompactFlash card from my Canon PowerShot A80 and plug it into my iPAQ, and use the HP Image Zone app to check out the images and remove the ones that don't make the cut - with its 480x640 screen, it's a much better photo-viewer than the camera's own LCD.

  • ...but someone else had already got there! I was thinking the fact that I was on dialup (and that your pictures were teh huauge) was the reason it was taking so long, and then I noticed that like 3/4 of the time, there was no modem activity going on at all!

After about 20 minutes and half a picture, I had to stop because my ISP cut me off for the night. Yay!

Oh hey, and I think I forgot to say CONGRATULATIONS! :)

  • I like the large pictures, because of the detail and clarity. However, I do agree with people, that the upload times seem slow. BroadbandReports.com has some speed tests your dad could run. They can be found here [broadbandreports.com].

For all I know, he really is getting the full 128 Kbps, and I just thought it was faster than that.

But the pictures are really nice. :-)

Picture IMG_0184.JPG looks like you were having fun.

    • Explanation on why my sister didn't edit the pictures is here [slashdot.org], and of course as stated on the page that she didn't really have the time.

For all I know, he really is getting the full 128 Kbps, and I just thought it was faster than that.

I highly doubt that. I have tested his connection for download speeds and he never gets good "grades" on that. Upload speeds were never tested, but I'll use the link you provided next time I'm at my parents. I'm running it for my own connection right now. (Using a
