Comment Walmart doesn't do tips (Score 1) 80

I don't know if HEB includes a tip, but I know that Walmart doesn't do tips. When I worked in the front end of a Walmart Supercenter six years ago, associates were trained to refuse tips, and if someone insists, to ring it up as a donation to whatever charity Walmart is collecting for at the time. Often that ends up being the nearest Children's Miracle Network hospital.

The department of education and various retardations like implicit and systemic bias being enshrined in the education system in the 90's are the two ways in which our education system was dumped in the shitter. When you refuse to suspend or expel the students who constantly disrupt class and intimidate other students and make fun of them for wanting to learn, the learning by students goes waaaayyyy down. Then of course there was, and in some districts still is the complete idiocy the composes common core math and whole word learning, which has utterly tanked reading and math ability with second order effects impacting everything else.

Do you have the code for the compiler, and compile that yourself too?

If you have three different compilers for a language, and you bootstrap a compiler using all three of them, the first generation (e.g. GCC compiled with QuestionableCC, ShadyCC, or SlopCC) should be functionally identical, and the second generation (GCC compiled with GCC, which was compiled with the other compiler) should be bit-identical. See "Fully Countering Trusting Trust through Diverse Double-Compiling" by David A. Wheeler. Some people have trouble trusting Rust because only the latest stable rustc can compile the latest stable rustc.

South Africa is about two steps away from total collapse due to the mismanagement of infrastructure and water resources since the ANC came to power with the population increase over the past 30 years and the reduced rain in 2016, 2019 and 2020 exposing just how bad the situation is. The 'official' estimate is they currently lose 30% of their drinkable water due to leaks and theft, which means the actual amount is almost certainly higher*.

*Poor government numbers should always be assumed to be worse than they are, and good ones better absent oddball situations. The magnitude of the amount depending on the local corruption and the significance of the effect on the government workers if they provide numbers their superiors don't like.

You said home ISPs sought to deploy Trusted Network Connect about 20 years ago. It hasn't happened. What's holding it up? The rise of mobile devices, smart TVs, and other devices incompatible with the remediation means available in quarantine?

Digital games themselves did not lower prices, despite them being marketed as doing so without the cost of materials/packaging/handling/shipping

From the summary: "Current prices are tied to retail. Without physical discs holding digital hostage we'll see a larger spectrum of pricing." As I understand this, paid downloads did not lower prices of AAA games because of retail price parity contracts. Paid downloads did, however, make the $5 to $20 tier for indie game pricing viable.

One thing not mentioned in the summary is that publishers of games distributed in physical copies owe a royalty to the age rating agency of each region in which a game is published. Publishers of downloadable games do not, instead relying on self-certification through the IARC form. The age rating agencies allow this because it's a lot more practical to update a game once it is found to have been misclassified.
