Comment ATSC 3.0 Game Changer for Range/Robustness (Score 2) 68
ATSC 3.0 for me has been a game changer in the Washington DC market at least. In the boonies of Frederick County, MD, it was very difficult for me to get CBS Channel 9.1 from Washington DC on ATSC 1.0 from my attic antenna for Baltimore Ravens games. Extremely finicky signals coupled with the fact that they were VHF which is highly prone to disturbance from solar radiation and even the recessed lights in my home killed the signal when I switched them on!
Enter ATSC 3.0. I manage to get a consistent signal across ALL the ATSC 3.0 Stations (Fox, NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS). The "lighthouse" approach has really helped me just pointing the direction of the antenna in a single location instead of a general direction where I can only hope to get a good enough signal across a few different transmitters. They also made all the ATSC 3.0 stations UHF, another reason why my signal is more consistent and more resistant to weather and random RF inside the home. Being 35 miles from DC in hilly and treetop laden terrain, this is really helpful. I find ATSC 3.0 to be much more robust in the rare instances where weather degrades the signal.
Honestly, the stations are not doing much with ATSC 3.0. I hear they are broadcasting in 1080P instead of 1080i which is a minor bump in image quality. The bulk of the benefits are in the range and robustness of the signal. Most lighthouse tower arrangements are also opting for UHF across all channels that they are hosting, which is better than VHF for signal consistency.
HDHomeRun 4K tuner allows me watch ATSC 3.0 channels on up to 2 TVs, all for free after the initial costs! In this case it paid to be an early adopter and stick it to the companies charging us 60+ dollars for sports and news. I sympathize that this is a chicken/egg question, but I feel TV manufacturers should be compelled by the FCC to include ATSC 3.0 tuners. It really is a game changer and philosophically provides free tv to the common public without requiring expensive subscriptions to YouTube TV etc. Free football and quality news (PBS NewHour) FTW!
