wrt "umbrella" vs "parapluie" : in french we also have the word "ombrelle", which is exclusively used to create a shadow ("ombre" in french) and protect us from the sun. On the other hand "parapluie" protects ("parer" in french, although "protéger" is used more often) from the rain ("pluie" in french).
