Submission + - Chernobyl's Radiophile Fungus (sciencealert.com)

j_f_chamblee writes: There is a black fungus thriving on the outside of the sarcophagus of Chernobyl's infamous Reactor 4. And it may be thriving because of the high radiation, not in spite of it. From the article:

"That fungus is called Cladosporium sphaerospermum, and some scientists think its dark pigment – melanin – may allow it to harness ionizing radiation through a process similar to the way plants harness light for photosynthesis. This proposed mechanism is even referred to as radiosynthesis."

Quoting the article: "Following schools over time, we find no significant effects on academic performance but some evidence of negative effects on grade progression.

Given what we now know about screen time and cognition and limits of electronic devices as educational tools, the conclusion above should surprise no one.

Given what we know about the links between poverty and levels of educational attainment, the conclusion below should likewise surprise no one.

"Following students over time, we find no significant effects on primary and secondary completion, academic performance in secondary school, or university enrollment"

Since the abstract recommendations are so vague and the full article is paywalled, it is hard to know what useful conclusions one might draw.

A consequence of "the great writing quality collapse" is the great comprehension collapse. One can reasonably ask whether Stetskov's poor writing is by default or by design. I spent decades both working in higher education and reading tech news. The result in this case was that, despite all my training, I didn't even notice the poor writing until I read this post.

Professor Capelli has also helpfully provided a new foreword to his remote work guidebook, "The Future of the Office," demonstrating why he is still right about remote work being the future whilst arguing we should go back to the office in his new-new book about how remote work is not the future.

Comment Tech Workers in non-tech industry? (Score 1) 166

I wonder about the degree to which things have gotten worse for workers doing IT work for companies that are not self-defining as tech companies. There are pluses and minuses to such jobs, of course, but in my experience one of the more crucial things a worker gains from the trade-off is stability.
