It's difficult for most people to understand, but even tyrants can do good while doing evil. Tyrants aren't 2-dimensional Republic serial villains, twirling their mustaches and cackling maniacally in their lair as they plot world domination. But to save you the trouble of looking, here's a surprisingly large list (although some points I would seriously dispute) of the good that came out of Germany from 1932-1945. Stalin was almost as much a monster as his German counterpart, but even he did some good things for his country as well.

Comment Penny Stocks Are Fine (Score 2) 35

Sure, penny stocks are risky as hell and I sure wouldn't have any penny stock in my IRA or other retirement account. Some penny stocks can be exceedingly volatile, and while most investors intelligently avoid volatility, some embrace the volatility and try to ride the waves. Buy low, sell high, buy low, sell high, wash rinse and repeat. Keep doing that often enough and you can triple (or more) your initial investment in less than a year. In short, penny stocks have their place and can be useful to investors/speculators.

How many times has the gov't thrown money at expanding rural broadband over the past 25 years? I'm too lazy to do the research, but I'm going to guess at least a half dozen times, minimum. And what have rural residents gotten? Not much.

Starlink has largely solved the rural broadband problem, so why not just give rural residents vouchers for Starlink? It would cost significantly less and reach more people.

Why would they crap in the hall when they have a bathroom in the room?

Maybe the toilets are clogged/broken. Maybe they're just too whacked out on drugs or mental problems to even find the toilet and just drop a turd wherever they want. NEVER underestimate how some humans can sink to sub-animal levels of behavior. An in-law's German Shepherd who I looked after for a week had the good sense to discreetly poop at one end of my back yard instead of doing it whenever and wherever the urge struck.

I see what you're getting at, but it's easy to reject a company, raise a fuss, and turn to a competitor/alternative over something that amounts to a hobby or pastime. The risks are very low. When the stakes are much higher, such as one's livelihood, then collective action becomes exponentially more difficult.Participating in strikes and protests is asking a lot of somebody to risk their paycheck-to-paycheck job and having a family to care for.

Oh, you mean like the Russian plans to go to the moon and Mars that are announced every few years? Yes, the Chinese space program has made serious strides in the past decade, but there's a huge difference between reaching LEO and reaching escape velocity (where you're halfway to anywhere). Space is hard and it's damn expensive. Plans are cheap. Plans are plentiful. Plans for conquering space are absurdly common. The challenge is developing the resources and capabilities to make the leap across the chasm that separates plans from actions.

Comment My Take on Point-and-Shoot vs. Phone Cameras (Score 2) 96

This is old news. Anybody who has visited the electronics department of their local department store in the past decade has seen point-and-shoot cameras slowly disappearing. Point-and-shoot and prosumer cameras have slowly been killed off by smart phone cameras. Which is too bad because, while I'm just a casual photographer at best, I know that point-and-shoot cameras are far superior to phone cameras in two key areas: optical zoom and sensor size.Zoom is always useful and even 3x optical zoom is better than most phone cameras. With higher zoom capability, the difference is significant. Shoot a sitting bird from 80 feet with a smart phone? You'll get a dark speck that vaguely resembles a bird. With a high zoom camera, you can clearly see every feather. With a larger sensor, point-and-shoot cameras have better low-light performance than the best phone camera. Another issue I have with phone cameras is the software. Skin textures are always smoothed out and look low res, whereas compact cameras accurately capture skin pores, wrinkles, and other minor blemishes. Finally, just to add salt to the wound, point-and-shoot cameras have become much more expensive.

Phone cameras are great for ultra casual photography, but for anything more challenging than parties and outdoor short range photos, they suck.

Be a freelancer or contractor. If your really want freedom and autonomy, it's far better to work WITH a company than FOR a company. As an independent contractor, I can set my rates (I recently raised my rate by 12% (after keeping my old rate for the past four years)), can write and post my ads, can accept or reject client projects, and can work the hours I want. When you have a skill the market values, you can capitalize on it and break the chains of servitude to an employer.
