Comment Competition is Good, even when late (Score 1) 46

Starlink subscription prices will not go down until competition. Even though Kuiper is really late to the gate, Kuiper could be cheaper(or have more options), like Android is to iPhone. Consumers can only win. For Slashdot, this will just be another vi vs emacs, android vs. iPhone, init.d vs systemd. I welcome my popcorn time with unconstructive comments on Kuiper.

Submission + - Report: Scientists at Center of 'Lab Leak' Concerns Misled Congress (hotair.com) 2

schwit1 writes: “A sprawling final report by the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic provokes questions over whether some in the scientific community – including EcoHealth Alliance, the American nonprofit that collaborated on novel coronavirus discovery and engineering research with the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and its president Peter Daszak – could face criminal charges stemming from the COVID-19 tragedy.”

Comment Re:So, what exactly is "Cop29"? (Score 1) 70

Why don't you just try following the news for the last few years and not just the right-wing echo chamber? Try not to be such an ornery old codger too: it's an easy enough search to find your answer, but I think you were trying to make a statement rather than ask an innocent question and truly learn something new.

msnb and cnn had a article on cop28, cnn's was february 2024, msnbc's was december 2023, neither had anything about cop29. In fact there were maybe 4 articles in 3 years that used that acronym cop(year). cbs news had one article on cop29 just this month. So the news the last few years on the non wight wing echo chambers, seems dry on using any acronym.

Comment NASA is a government Agency, so ..... (Score 1) 94

Nasa budgets comes from senators and congress critters voting. Those people represent their states and districts. One of their jobs is to bring federal dollars spending to their states and districts. Spending on SpaceX is not something that congress can control where the money gets spent. Impossible to force SpaceX to make jobs in some state, or force SpaceX to subcontract out parts to other states or districts. NASA just does what is must to continue to get DC to allocate it funds.

Submission + - Open-sourcing of WinAmp goes badly as owners delete entire repo (theregister.com) 1

king*jojo writes: The owners of WinAmp have just deleted their entire repo one month after uploading the source code to GitHub. Lots of source code, and quite possibly, not all of it theirs.

The deletion happened soon after The Register enquired about the seeming inclusion of Shoutcast DNAS code and some Microsoft and Intel codecs.
