I Was an Intel Employee when Andy Grove was CEO, when Engineering was king. After he retired (Intel has a mandatory retirement age), and Craig Barrett took over, every department and every group was turned into a P&L cost center. Every decision made, at every level, was tailored to its impact on shareholder value. It got worse under Otellini, who was not shy about his duty to âoeshareholders firstâ. He frequently commented that his primary responsibility was to the shareholders.
There were many many many other poor decisions that affect Intel to this day, including itâ(TM)s insistence that x86 can last forever.
Itâ(TM)s a damn shame the âoevirusâ swept through Intel. They would have absolutely clobbered any competition by sheer engineering talent and manufacturing prowess, had it not been for the collective loss of vision by the leaders.
Very similar to whatâ(TM)s going on at Boeing.
