Journal heliocentric's Journal: Moz Java install help, and yes, I know I'm a dummy head 8

Ok, I know I'm a dummy head sometimes but this one just seems odd to me and I thought I'd ask those who find this journal and those fans who bother to read. I got moz 1.0 for windows running here at work and things are happy, except for java. Java didn't come ready to go so I need a plugin - fine, ok, whatever. Except the magic plug in finder yeilds linkage to
ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape/plugins/java/english/windows/win32/jre140_01i.xpi
and never seems to do anything about it. I can download the file to my hard drive, but can't figure out what to do with it from there. The magic happy plug in finder suggests it just will install automagically, but that just isn't happening.

If I don't right-click and do a save as I got a large display of junk starting with PK and going down hill from there.

Suggestions as to where I'm being a dummy head and how to fix this?

Thanks!

UPDATE!!! Ok, the box was checked to enable installs but it wasn't working. I then went and did a file "open with" and picked moz but that didn't go anywhere. Finally I went into moz and did a file open, picked the file, and did an install. Thank you all for your helpful posts. If only there was a online bar that let you hook a tab to the USB port, I'll buy you all a round.

Moz Java install help, and yes, I know I'm a dummy head

  • I think that the .xpi files are used by the Netscape Installer during the install/setup process, a bit like .msi files are meant for the Windows installer.

So you can't do anything with this file unless you find a way to "feed it" through the NS installer or setup program. I dunno if this helps, but that's my undersatanding of the thing so far. Good luck :)
    • To make my pont above a bir less shalow, look what's under ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape6/english/ 6.2.3/windows/win32/

You will see a lot of .xpi files. The sum of them make the complete Netscape install, but the individual files allow the installer to fetch only the necessary components from the server at the time of the installation.

The file you have mentionned seems to contain the Java portion (perhaps the VM or something else related).

Also, try downloading from the Mozilla releases page. This XPI is available there. [netscape.com]
  • I culd get it to work for hushmail. It just started a bunch of java_vm processes. So, I also have netscape (not mozilla) installed. It works much better when java is concerned.
  • First, download the xpi as if it was anything else. Save it to a folder.

Now use file:// to open that folder in Mozilla. (file:///home/ or file://C:\, for example)

Doubleclick on the xpi. That should start the install process.

    Hope this helps...
