Submission + - Windows 10 shares your Wi-fi password with friends, and with their friends

gsslay writes: The Register reports that Windows 10 will include, defaulted on, "Wi-Fi Sense", a facility to share wifi passwords with friends. (Outlook.com (nee Hotmail) contacts, Skype contacts and, with an opt-in, Facebook friends.)

This involves Microsoft storing the wifi passwords entered into your laptop (any password, not necessarily just your own). This can then be used by any other person suitably connected to you. If you don't want someone's Windows 10 passing on your password, Microsoft has two solutions; only share passwords using their Wi-Fi Sense service (which can't be passed on), or by adding "_optout" to your SSID. (Similar to Google's "_nomap" that went down so well.)

Submission + - Bot Nets Behind Recent Spam Surge

gsslay writes: Everyone must have noticed a surge in spam recently, particularly for stock pump 'n' dump scams. The Register reports that anti-spam companies have seen a 30% increase in the last two months and, more worryingly, more of this spam is getting through to mailboxes due to the spammers change in tactics. Rather than use unsecured mail relays spammers are using bot nets, making spam harder to identify and eliminate. Bounced spam is also on the up, and some experts reckon it's past time to start worrying.

I know 90% of all email through my domain is either spam or bounced spam and more than ever is evading my ISP's spam filter. It's been predicted often enough before, but is email set to drown in a sea of dross? As one of the experts says; what's needed to stop spam is for people to stop doing business with it. But as the response rate to spam goes down, spammers are only increasing their output to compensate.
