For those interested in the current state of drive in theatres, Carl Weese had a Kickstarter project (which I backed) to fund a road trip in order to photograph as many of the remaining drive in theatres as possibly before the switch to digital projection. Many theatres were not expected to be able to fund the transition to digital projection.

Some of those photographs were featured on MSN and more are available on his site.

My kids have had email addresses from the day they were born. Once we finalised their names, I registered domain names for them and set them up on Google apps for domains.

For now, their email is forwarded to Mum until they can read.

Modems did not always have symmetric upload download speeds. I remember using by 1200/75 modem back in the day - 1200 bits per second upstream and 75 bps upstream.

Guitar Hero III the First Game to $1 Billion In Sales 106

The Opposable Thumbs blog reports that Guitar Hero III has reached a financial milestone, becoming the first individual video game to reach $1 billion in total sales. The number is even higher if you consider the rest of the franchise. In addition to helping drive the video game industry during tough economic times (much like the Wii), it's helping other industries as well: "... aside from the fact that Guitar Hero: Aerosmith had sold three times as many copies as the band's last album during their respective first weeks, musicians whose music is featured in the game has seen a rise in music sales to the tune of 15-843 percent." And CVG notes, "... two-thirds of non-musicians exposed to music games plan to start playing a real instrument in the next couple of years." Also, Rock Band creator Harmonix may be looking into a partnership with the record labels to sell music for use outside of the games.

The nytfeed provides us with an article about the current state of internet connectivity on the African continent. Only 4 percent of Africa's population has regular access to the internet, with most of those people living in North African countries, or the country of South Africa. This might seem like a market ripe for development, but the article explains that there are numerous difficulties involved getting an infrastructure project off the ground. "Africa's only connection to the network of computers and fiber optic cables that are the Internet's backbone is a $600 million undersea cable running from Portugal down the west coast of Africa. Built in 2002, the cable was supposed to provide cheaper and faster Web access, but so far that has not happened. Prices remain high because the national telecommunications linked to the cable maintain a monopoly over access, squeezing out potential competitors. And plans for a fiber optic cable along the East African coast have stalled over similar access issues. Most countries in Eastern Africa, like Rwanda, depend on slower satellite technology for Internet service." The good news is that, of course, progress is being made. Just ... slowly.
