Comment misleading headline/summary (Score 1) 102

Just as people can mod a story, can we mod the headline ?
on this case, the headline "Chevy Silverado EV Drives 1,059.2 Miles on a Single Charge, Surpassing World Record" shold get a mod value of 1 or 2, as the headline should read
"heavily modified car manages to go further on one battery charge in non realistic use case" or something like that

Why should I switch to Linux from Windows ?
Give me a reason that I care about, not a reason you care about
You have been telling me , nonstop, for 25 years that OSS is good
and you know what ? I don't care, and if I haven't changed my mind in 25 or so years, I"m not gonna change now

let me repeat that I don't care about OSS and you are not gonna change my mind.

My main use of office is to make graphs in excel. every 5 years or so, I download the latest open office thing, or libre thing, and give it a whirl, and *for what I do* libre is not ready for prime time
we have lot of $$ instruments where I work, in a biotech, that use windows, and there is no Linux; why should I go to the trouble of having a different OS ?
eg this guy

the windows software barely works; I very much doubt they have a 'nix version

etc etc;
I can't see a reason that I care about that would make me want to switch

also, how on earth am I supposed to choose a distro ? and once I do, almost certainly, cause there are so many, each one won't work that well, cause there isn't a critical mass of maintainers

I don't care about buying a new laptop every 5 or 8 years; in my experience, what always breaks is the hardware, not the OS (yeah, I spill coffee on my laptop; sue me)

For those who don't have access, here's an open link to the article: https://ancillary-proxy.atarimworker.io?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nytimes.com%2F2025%2F0... The melting of sea ice itself doesn't cause a rise in sea level because the mass is already pushing on the ocean. However, sea ice reflects sunlight and reduces the warming of sea water at the edge of the continent. Sea ice also acts to pin ice on land, reducing the rate at which ice slides off the land into the ocean. A reduction in sea ice is generally understood to accelerate the melting of ice on shore.

It is truly reprehensible that they're seeking to destroy all abject truth around their favorite political talking points. It's so sad that so many people are proud to believe anything they are told, and that many will cheer these closures. Production of concrete results contrary to tightly held personal beliefs is exactly why science is not political, and should not be run as a political exercise.

Comment Design follows production (Score 1) 246

Don't forget that design follows production, especially for mass produced goods. When both happen in close proximity, communication is better and iteration times for design samples and production updates are shorter.

As a result, the production process is typically more optimized and more often takes advantage of the latest advances in production. This can get you better or cheaper products, depending on what market the you're aiming at.

More and more US companies have moved their design studios, or parts of them, from the US to China. And Chinese companies can play the IP game as well as American ones.
