I have an Oculus 2, notwithstanding FB's involvement it's a great piece of kit, being around in the early-mid 90s and using one of the Virtuality headsets I saw the potential inherent in the technology even as a kid and I waited for so long to experience something which would be a both an evolution and a complete game changer in terms of VR. Other examples have been tantalisingly close. Through the eyepieces, the experience is incredible with atmospheric, jaw-dropping moments even in games which as standalone FPS etc would be barely better than average. I can watch movies on a virtual cinema using bluetooth headphones in bed completely enclosed while my wife sleeps at 4am, watch and play with friends living far away, abroad even. I would have bought it just for the Resident Evil compatibility, the rest has had me blown away completely... when the next gen of graphics cards come out I will fire up Flight Simulator and that's another feature I have had out of it (being able to fully immerse myself in a Tie Fighter was an incredibly special moment too, since 1994 on a 486 the possibility has always existed). I've had a lot less fun out of £300 in the past, that's for sure.

This won't work, it's up to us to stay one step ahead in blocking the content at home but once they're out at school there's no way to monitor what goes on. I get worried, I have a little girl and it scares me to think of all the shit out there. To be fair, we downloaded our fair share of the same stuff in the mid-late 90s but then the audience was largely made up of harmless geeks like me. It's worrying.

Comment Don't hate certs (Score 1) 266

Experience and certs can be acquired concurrently, pick certs up for the technologies you work with and do the reading/hands on rather than braindumping it. You'll learn and make your C.V. look better. If nothing else a lot of shops need certified people to maintain partner agreements and if they've had a couple people leave then that CCNA or MCITP might push you into a job over the more experienced non-certified applicant, or into an interview for a position with 1000 applicants. Just don't take advanced certs for techs you have no experience with, these paper certs make job-hunting difficult for everyone and waste time for recruiters and hiring managers. Some certification programs are quite challenging and intellectually rewarding and make a candidate stand out from the crowd.
