I have tried the Beyond Burger both as purchased from the supermarket and in fast food chains and restaurants. From the supermarket, I noticed that it didn't really cook like a burger. My wife and I definitely had to treat it more like hash browns rather than a meat patty which had enough fat to keep itself from sticking. I think out of the entire pack of four patties, we got one good one and three which turned into hockey pucks. It didn't really taste like meat either, neither of us could identify what it actually tasted like - just that it wasn't bad. It wasn't good either. I suspect the marketing really hurt it here. By associating it so strongly with "meat", when it doesn't taste like meat, it's a huge disappointment.
Figuring that it was just us, we ran out to a fast food chain to try their beyond meat hamburger. This time we could identify the flavor: Both sandwiches we ordered tasted distinctly like carrots. This is through all the other stuff Burger King throws on there. It was definitely carrots. It had some nice char, but it was carrots.
Finally we tried the Dunkin' one. They were using it as a replacement for sausage in their omelettes, so it wasn't bad. At least the carroty taste sort of blended in better with the egg bowl rather than being front and center for "this isn't beef". It was definitely within the realm of something you might eat and not notice the substitution if you were a bit openminded about what a breakfast bowl would taste like. The problem here is really that the veggie taste, which is OK in this format, just seems silly. Why not order it with extra veggies or no meat at all and stick to less processed options?
