Feed Engadget: Realtek and Intel to show off single-chip WUSB solutions at CES (engadget.com)

It looks like Realtek and Intel will each be doing their part to push wireless USB (or WUSB) at CES, with the pair set to team up to demonstrate how their respective single-chip solutions work with one another. Those solutions include Realtek's RTU7105 Wireless USB device and Intel's Wireless UWB Link 3480 Single-Chip CMOS Wireless USB host device, each of which are interoperable in multiple WiMedia band groups, including multiple bands that meet existing worldwide regulatory requirements. Not exactly the most exciting stuff for casual consumers to be sure, but according to the two companies, this will be the first public demonstration of WUSB interoperability involving single-chip solutions for both the host and device and, given the likely preponderance of such devices in the not too distant future, that's certainly something at least worth taking note of.

Feed Techdirt: Yet Another Keyword Advertising Suit... And Yet Another Ruling That Keyword Ads (techdirt.com)

We're beginning to get quite sick of companies claiming that having a trademark give them total control over a trademarked phrase. That's simply not true and never has been true. Yet it shows up all the time in the ever popular lawsuits over keyword advertisements. Over and over again the courts have shown that it's perfectly fine to use a competitor's trademarked phrase or name as a keyword to put up a competitive ad. The latest such case highlights an important point. While many of the cases have argued that using a keyword isn't "use in commerce," (a key part in determining if a trademark has been violated) this ruling found that it actually was used in commerce... but it still didn't matter because just because you own a trademark doesn't mean you can prevent all uses of it. You can only prevent uses that are likely to confuse potential customers over who is actually selling what, or that will dilute your brand. That's not the case when someone is simply putting up a competitive ad -- and it's nice to see a court recognize that fact.

Feed Engadget: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GX2 pics, specs leaked (engadget.com)

Details aren't quite hard and fast, but this is NVIDIA's top-of-the-line to-be, so it's never too early to start nerding out. [H]ard|OCP says the best way to think of the GeForce 9800 GX2 is a 8800 that's been shrunk down to 65nm and SLI'd onto a "single" card. The card is supposed to be at least 30% faster than a 8800 Ultra, and will apparently support Quad SLI. So, now for the really nerdy part:
  • 1GB frame buffer
  • Two PCBs
  • Two 65nm GPUs
  • 256 Stream Processors
That's the way [H]ard|OCP tells it, and who are we to argue?

MS Drops Licensing Restrictions from Web Server 2008 226

Channel Guy writes "According to a report from CRN, Microsoft plans to allow users of the Web Server SKU in Windows Server 2008 to 'run any type of database software with no limit on the number of users, provided they deploy it as an Internet-facing front-end server.' The previous limit was 50 users. Microsoft's partners expect the changes to go a long way toward making Windows Web Server 2008 more competitive with the LAMP stack, against which Microsoft has been making headway in recent months."
