Comment Don't take my "Wet squelching" or "Sucks teeth" (Score 1) 103

The subtitles have brought so many new things to my attention. Also, the music descriptors are great: "Dark," "Sinister," "Intriguing." Netflix is obviously going to fill any niche it finds available, but I enjoy the current subtitles. Also, I follow the Santa Barbara Zoo on Instagram (@santabarbarazoo) and they always post an Alt-text for all their posts in the caption -- and they often rival the photos. I guess the point is that, done well, these additional feeds can add value even to those who don't strictly need them. But, for those who do, I'm glad that some content producers take them seriously.

Comment I have fairly complicated taxes. (Score 2) 123

But even still, the government receives all my tax information from 3rd parties. Everything that I file individually, has already been seen as a 1099, k-1, or w2. There is the foreign account form you have to file, but that info may or may not have been provided to them depending on the country. Still, even in this degenerate case, they could provide a summary to you that you could work from. Instead, you get nothing. Certainly for the modal case where you have *a* job and get a w2 you could just get a simple bill to start from. The fact that you don't is merely because of the lobbying power of the tax filing services. This seems like an easy, bi-partisan win for whoever makes the change. It's just a matter of convincing all of the paid for congress-people to vote for it.

Comment The robots.txt thing seems like a tell. (Score 1) 65

Easy enough to skip those pages. Cloudflare is obviously so big that ai bots will adapt to its specific strategies. This would work well for a single site, but not for all of their customers. Also, I hope we're close to the point we can admit that the bots can identify squares that contain a traffic light (motorcycle, staircase) as well as me.

Comment PII to the worst people (Score 3, Insightful) 50

It seems like Utah is forcing citizens to give PII to the people we'd all least like to have it. Probably easy to bypass for those we'd like to help avoid these sites and a honeytrap for those who're trying to be honest. Even in the old days, we all got our hands on a Penthouse or Hustler. They didn't require the purchasers to put their SSNs into a database, let alone one owned by criminals.

Comment Re:Why the obsession with metaphors for scale? (Score 1) 25

It seems like it's usually Rhode Island or Manhattan in the metaphor, so thankfully both absent here. Also, turns out that lots of things are "smaller than a human hair" -- though not in this case. The Grand Canyon itself is also frequently used as a reference, and makes an appearance in this story. A bullet, though, is a pretty good reference. Small, harmless in its resting state, but violent when up to speed. You know you're fucked if you get hit by a bullet, or anything moving at bullet velocity. If you get hit by something much larger than a bullet moving at bullet speed (debris from a cosmic impact, say), doubly so.

Comment Switching flavors of linux sucks (Score 5, Insightful) 79

And yet, weirdly, the linux guys in your organization come up with a reason to really want to do it every 7 years or so. Honestly, getting acquired by a company that has it's own flavor and a huge fuck off cloud that runs on that flavor is a much better reason than most I've heard.

Comment Re:Huge water reservoirs (Score 2) 59

It's easier than you'd think, because the spaces already exist in many places. The story mentions a dam that releases to aquifer recharge zones. The ground is naturally quite porous, so carving giant storage caverns isn't necessary. A lot of the west has been drawing a deficit against aquifer storage for many years, but recharge is possible when you have excess surface water. Here's an example story. https://ancillary-proxy.atarimworker.io?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.nbcbayarea.com%2Fnew...
