Comment AI is commodity now (Score 1) 39

AI is now a commodity, and a cheap one, where the real value is how you use and apply it. That field haven't really begun yet, all we have seen is a fun chat show case and some fancy autocompletion. What we need is finding out how it can improve business and peoples lives. I very much hope for an AI robot butler at home.

True that Apple hasn't made anything interesting for a while. It is a consequence of aging in upper leadership with no ambition and a safe market position. I hope that the entry of AI can remove the reliance in big screens, abondency of apps and excessive hours of device use. Perhaps subscription driven instead of ad driven. Rectangular devices with round corners are the beige boxes of the 2020ies.

All these personal names for assistants, I am not convinced. In Star Trek NG they nailed it. They just call the computer for computer. You may argue that the computer is an actual device you have in front of you, but that is increasingly just a terminal for the services and AI behind. So I suggest in the spirit of the Google Assistant's original hot-word "OK Google" that we should address the assistant "OK Computer". No reference to Radiohead at all :)

What would have avoided this, is read only hard disk images. A bootloop or a failing self test should trigger an automatically roll back. That would prevent a lot of attacks also. About mono culture, as is in biology is not sustainable. It also put you in a disadvantage in contract negotiations, leading much more expensive infrastructure than needed. Check AWS pricing vs Hetzner.

The real reason is that PWAs are good enough for many applications and games. When opening up for alternative browsers, you are also breaking the monopoly of the app store and Apple payment monopoly, because you cannot block individual PWAs. They can control the supported feature set of PWAs on Safari but not on Chrome or other browsers. Chrome are free to add more and more features to PWAs until the whole Apple eco system has been fully undermined. If they block third party browsers from creating PWAs but let Safari continue doing so, they are abusing their quasi monopoly and they will be sitting ducks for the EU to issue hefty fines.

Comment Read between the lines (Score 2) 84

Businesses should be read between the lines. Hashicorp is obviously not making a profit from its open source tools and turns it into closed source. It is an experiment and if it fails Hashicorp will loose interest in the products. In that case, the customers that actually paid for it is in trouble because a BSL product cannot live a healthy life if the original authors loose interest. Open source is good for customers not (just) because they are cheapskates, but because it makes sure that the product is able to live on, even if the original publisher looses interest. It also tilts the balance of power to customers so that they are somewhat protected from software publishers behaving erratically, like Unity did with its game engine.
