Palemoon is lightning fast compared to firefox for my use case: running the browser on [somewhat] capable hardware and displaying over network to slower [potentially expendable] hardware. (This comment brought to you by a Thinkpad 770Z from 1998.) A couple years ago palemoon started compiling binaries which use the AVX2 instruction which left me version locked and doesn't work with bank's billpay. So I use palemoon unless I have to use firefox which is painfully slow but more compatible.

On firefox I pair umatrix with "Disable JavaScript" which I have configured to toggle javascript on a per-tab basis. Someday real soon now I'll set up a palemoon profile with ematrix, but AFAIK there's no equivalent of the javascript tab toggle for palemoon.

While powerful, filtering by domain is still pretty coarse. It's "run everything" from that domain, and anymore, several more where the web site has outsourced essential functions to. No fine-grained selection like "upvoting" or (a personal peeve) "lazy-loading". UblockOrigin shows signs of being able to poke into the DOM, but I'm not versed on what or how that works (and whether Manifest v3 kills it).

Firehose +|- requires javascript. I assume that javascript is required for ranking and rating individual comments too, since I've never seen any way to do this and always have javascript disabled.

A little bit of javascript is like being a little bit pregnant. There's no such thing as "just run the little bit javascript that upvotes".

I've got [counting...counting...counting...] 8 things inside that need to be adjusted, plus dash clock outside (, plus at least 3 don't-cares). 2 single purpose clocks auto adjust from that radio signal from Colorado. Computers and smartphones follow rules in localtime database, so as long as those don't change...

I'd like to go Standard time, at least for a couple years as an experiment. I don't like the sudden extra hour in the freezing dark in the morning and the extra hour of heat at bedtime later on.

This. Flock is not an anomaly. It's just who the onslaught of negative publicity is currently pointed at. Seems like no one understands this.

Almost everyday now I'm reminded of something I saw going through Rockford Files on DVD. Season 4 episode "The House on Willis Avenue" ends with a title card warning (as wikipedia put it) "that computer networks that gather vast amounts of information about people's private lives are a potential danger". That was in 1978. We're way, way, way past Flock, Equifax, Google, Meta, et al. setting up clandestine data centers in suburban houses.

Disagree. The financials say that the companies that spy do well (at the thing they care solely about). It was at least a decade ago that the then Vizio CEO stated that they make more monitizing the TV buyer after purchase than from the TV purchase itself. Wal*Mart bought Vizio in 2024. The GamersNexus video showed a table of financials where the margin on TV hardware was -0.8% while the margin on post-purchase monitization was 63% (IIRC). So they lose a little bit on the hardware and make up for it with ongoing income from indefinite monitization.

Even if you refuse to accept the terms, or (if applicable) send a notarized, signed in blood opt-out of Arbitration Clause, for any class action lawsuit the eligible class members would be the dozen or so people who exempted themselves. With Arbitration, corporation wins either way.

With the subtext that an EV requires a smartphone with a fat unlimited data plan (and possibly the car too). Alot of people do, so maybe that's not much of an issue.

Years of watching EV roadtrip videos reinforces your brother's impression/conclusion. EV charging is phenomenally worse than ICE "charging". Obvious things like failed charging starts to obscure things like realizing that the charge rate is abnormally lower than it should be. And do ICE have "fill curves" where the last gallon (or several) to fill a tank take extra hour(s)?

My kludgey environment involves privoxy and browser running with no direct internet access. The switch the everything https has left privoxy as only a hostname filter, similar to pi-hole, but not at network level which allows for multiple concurrent filters (for various uses).

Firefox takes minutes to come up it makes alot of uncommanded requests. For the profiles with a whitelist privoxy config, things get held up until these requests timeout.

Firefox is also painfully slow because they switched to canvas drawing. Palemoon zips right along using xlib primitives.
