Comment Boats are always slow (Score 2, Insightful) 80

It already is much cheaper and slower than flying; so what if they go slower if it ends up cheaper... If it costs the same and is slower then we really should do something to make polluting boats pay more for the harm they cause.

FYI: The top 12 mega cargo ships pollute more than ALL the cars combined; I forget the exact number but it's around a dozen! If I was presi-dictator, I'd sink every mega ship and offer non-profit nuclear powered ships managed by the navy (since they are the only ones who competently and securely handle nuclear power.) Given the scope of the global problem is a bigger threat than any war and this cost would be trivial. Furthermore, if it's ok to blow up fishing boats in the name of drugs it's certainly more justified to sink a dozen mega cargo ships.

What I'd like to see is an electric boat with solar and wind; obviously with generators picking up the slack. Yes, solar wouldn't generate hardly anything close to what is needed; however, it's the cheapest electricity and would quickly pay for itself. Generators can easily be swapped out at anytime while giant ICE engines can not... I know there are electric boats running from generators already; I don't know how widespread that has become. I'd also have solar covers over the shipping containers; wouldn't take much time to attach/detach those given how automation is taking over loading/unloading... I bet the extra human labor time is still worth it. Not that we should be shipping things cheaply around the world like we do. It's absolutely insane that something like US organic chicken gets shipped to china to be processed then shipped around... or how dozens of cows of beef from all over get ground into burgers etc. Those are some really cheap shipping costs...

not ideal. batteries are ideal. hydro is ideal. Simply using distance grid transport is great too. They are still not great to flip on and off constantly. For short spikes, flywheels are probably better.

Still, base load power for the grid is a myth; it's not going to be cost effective, it probably isn't already - not too many run those turbines very long.

It has to open in a fire. I can't imagine otherwise; however, I can imagine a slim chance it stops working when the power goes out... but unlikely. Cut the power or light a fire and you are out. Or simply ask an employee. If they won't let you out, call the police which likely they would be doing since you probably are stealing if they won't let you out... or you're robbing them and they don't want you to beat/shoot them to get out... I bet a gun gets you out pretty fast.

What I'd like to know is if they set off an alarm, does that make it impossible to get out? So now out of panic the perp has to be convinced the employee can't do anything after the alarm was triggered and also not get angry and shoot... not like they are all sane enough to consider the consequences of murder and a certain capture; one would like to think they'd be mindful enough to try breaking out before getting revenge on the employee.

Not that we don't have bigger problems with a lack of public restrooms and businesses denying access to theirs!

Gas takes time and money to get those boilers (steam engines) up and running... What is done, is that hydro is shutdown quicker so that the gas/coal/nuke can continue to run. Hydro is more like a mechanical battery (charged by the rain or a pump;) sadly, your gas actually reduces the hydro and battery usage. If we're talking adaptable grids, there is no practical place for this base load BS the industry argues to prolong their steam engines. The profitable times are during high demand and the losses are in the low demand and spikes; which cheaper solar energy does best during daytime demand (often tied to cooling which directly relates to sunlight) and it creates more spikes... Also being a grid, the losses for long distance power sources are less than gas plants and the grid is in need of upgrading anyway.

Industrial non-stop usage is another matter.

OTOH the nice thing about software is that it's easy to update, so anyone is free to replace their slow/inefficient software with a faster/efficient version as soon as they obtain it, at which point their fast hardware should run the efficient software very quickly. Nothing (except possibly bad management decisions?) is preventing anyone from creating efficient software, either.

Look into Nixon's war on education and the Powell Memo. It didn't really get going until afterwards, when polling moved education near the top of the public's priorities which made it into a political football ever since.

Home ownership and healthcare are the primary methods to indenture and rob the masses; student loans are a distant 3rd. Wages have been stolen for generations...beginning since around the Nixon era as well... productivity gains never go to people's paychecks. I see students starting out on par or lower than the same jobs 20 years ago as if there was zero inflation during that period - and for many the problems began with career shifting in the 80s; also when both parents had to work to maintain lifestyle which was sold as women empowerment; stronger than they did with cigarettes (starting out as freedom sticks and latching onto the popular suffrage movement.)

Competition isn't the solution to a systematic problem...an attack really. That is far more like divide and conquer with a business slanted version of infighting.

Furthermore, they want a profiling AI system entrenched everywhere so good luck finding work when clients use AI to filter applicants using that company's AI systems... or whatever job referrals become with intercommunication between AI systems in the not so distance future.

Finally, they are going to teach BEYOND the job skills into their warped versions of civics etc. to indoctrinate workers even further into licking the boots of their oppressive master who's boot is on their neck. The guy is into some sci-fi darkness plus he probably wants to improve upon China's tactics. It's interesting how mega rich all want to create their own societies where they control all the worker's lives... Even Henry Ford tried his hand at it after the last Robber Barron age. A company town/dorm is so obvious but with tech, you can create a new flavor of feudalism never seen before.

Can you create knowledge workers who think but also are mindless worker drones? Hitler proved it was somewhat possible; so we're going to continue to see new attempts. If his people rose up against him, that might discourage as many attempts in the future... but they did not...largely because of the number of true believers to oppress them and with computer tech you won't need that many enforcers.
