Comment It pays for itself. (Score 3, Informative) 56

A 6.6kW panel array with a 5kW inverter costs about US$3000 installed. Electricity prices are around 20-25c per kWh so for an average house it pays for itself in just a few years. Warmer climates also have the advantage where you need to most energy (air-conditioning) when solar output is highest so you maximise efficiency.

There are also low-interest payment plans where your weekly outlay is almost down to your weekly savings off your electricity bill so it's not even a noticeable outlay. After a few years it's paid off and you still have a significantly lowered power bill for at least the 10 years the system is warrantied.

If you have the roof space, it's one of those no-brainer financial decisions.

That'll be those pipes George W. Bush was tellin' us about.

Tubes. "A series of tubes" and it was Alaskan Senator Ted Stevens.

If he'd actually said "pipes" all of Slashdot would have been on his side.

Comment Re:Why Microsoft a Gold Sponsor? (Score 1) 30

I can well imagine them throwing a few thousand dollars to Blender as a thank you for creating some models. But to become a Gold Sponsor would suggest that they are taking some sort of interest in animation.

Blender is far too complex to be used as a free animator supplied with Windows like Photo. So what is it?

How much would it have cost Microsoft to become a Gold Sponsor?

It's not about Pixar animation so much as Fortnite animation. Microsoft wants creators on the PC. They want games on their Xbox. There's no hidden agenda.

Gold is 6 months developer time - about $50k.

Yeah, but what are you gonna do the next time around when China is the source of the next outbreak?

Then again, you could do sequels. Worked well for various movies of the genre. Worked even if they had nothing to do with each other whatsoever.

Because what private collectors interested in rare antiquities want is a plastic copy....

Fossils are very rarely complete. If a collector has two-thirds of a T-Rex skeleton, they would absolutely want the last third in plastic for display purposes. Even if it's bright red PVA to highlight what's real and what's not.
