Former Head of NSA Calls For Obama To Reject NSA Commission Recommendations 316

An anonymous reader writes that USA Today reports "Retired general Michael Hayden ... called on President Obama Monday to ... reject many of the recommendations of the commission he appointed to rein in NSA surveillance ... 'President Obama now has the burden of simply doing the right thing,' ... 'And I think some of the right things with regard to the commission's recommendations are not the popular things. They may not poll real well right now. They'll poll damn well after the next attack ...' ... The commission ... said the recommendations were designed to increase transparency, accountability and oversight at the NSA. Hayden ... oversaw the launch of some of the controversial programs ... He defended them as effective and properly overseen by congressional intelligence committees and a special court. 'Right now, since there have been no abuses and almost all the court decisions on this program have held that it's constitutional, I really don't know what problem we're trying to solve by changing how we do this,' he said."

Radical New Icebreaker Will Travel Through the Ice Sideways 62

cylonlover writes "Given that icebreakers clear a path for other ships by traveling through the ice head-on (or sometimes butt-on), then in order for one of them to clear a wider path, it would have to be wider and thus larger overall ... right? Well, Finland's Arctech Helsinki Shipyard is taking a different, more efficient approach. It's in the process of building an asymmetric-hulled icebreaker that can increase its frontal area, by making its way through the ice at an angle of up to 30 degrees."

Hypercard and Hyperstudio! I played around making all sorts of silly games, slowly learned how to add in some scripting on my own, tinkering about. Had a course in highschool that went into more depth, and then a class in Java.

This is it. The culmination of the human experience. Countless generations led us here, to this point in time -- this glorious point in time, in which man has finally done it! We can now interact with rats via robots. We're done here, humans. We've won. Anything else form here on out is just frosting on the cake.

Keep in mind, this is before the game even goes up for sale, which I'm sure will generate additional revenue. It's already a company, they have other revenue sources through sales of their previous games, etc. This is the initial investment capitol not "ZOMG we need to feed 47 people" capitol.

That mark is useless without the table that tells you what each distance represents. So on that matchstick you haven't stored data, merely a hash of that data.

Incorrect: as long as you can measure that mark as a distance with arbitrary precision you can use that to convey any amount of data. For instance, your distance could be 0.7269767679 mm, which, with a simple 1:1 dec to ascii conversion is 0.HELLO, assuming you use fractions of a millimeter for your data. See? With infinite precision comes infinite data. Infinite precision is, of course, difficult to impossible in the real world, but that's never stopped me before.

A well thought out article, though I'm not sure about your claim that polygamy creates a less warlike mentality. I've heard quite the opposite argued, in fact, that widespread polygamy makes prospective mates less common for those who have less available to offer, which leads to frustration and violence. Of course, this is just an argument I've heard, [citation needed].
