It's 0.02%. This value is from the CDC. All the replies to this post (which is a single instance of a couple severe cases) is filled with asshole know-it-alls. The flu causes similar problems to some unlucky people. The IFR for the flu is ~0.018%. I'm really tired of the fear.

This technology doesn't cause the problem, but it certainly exacerbates it and grows the power of the people who are currently burning people.

I'm more concerned about it being done intentionally to people who are politically "dangerous." Think about all the political "criminals" that were thrown in gulags in Russia.

I'm worried less about ageism and the cargo-cult programmers who latch on to the newest shiny constantly. They tend to shun engineers who are more reserved about their technology choices. "You're not a good programmer unless you used at least 15 different frameworks for your project..."

Actually, "no discrimination" means selecting applicants at random. And that *would* result in demographics that matched the general population.

Nothing in your post disagrees with what I said.

Two things, first you have to establish what discrimination means in a concrete way, and second you have to prove that Harvard is doing it. With regards to the first, the only statistically meaningful mechanism of measuring institutionalized discrimination is by looking for a difference between demographics of the institution's selection population, and the general population. With regards to point two, Harvard is obviously extremely discriminatory, but not to Asians.

Couple of more things:

• There are more people applying than can possibly be admitted, the entire process of selecting applicants is designed to discriminate.
• SAT scores are one of those means TO discriminate people.
• You're assuming the ability to PAY for school doesn't factor in at all in the admissions of a private institution.

You're assuming there's some kind of metric that makes a person "qualified for admission to Harvard." There is no yardstick which you can take to a person and say, "this person has N harvard admission units."

As an active member of the D community, I agree with what you're saying. Some of it is an issue of manpower though. I've seen these things start to change recently as more people have come onboard.

That's completely false. The posters on the D Forum are made up of almost complete C and C++ programmers.

To be honest, I like California weather. What I DONT understand is why all these startups cluster so close to downtown San Francisco. I'd love to be up somewhere a bit farther north like Ukiah, or Willits CA.
