Journal ellem's Journal: My Feet, your shoes 15

Some of you may remember that my feet are bothering me, as in I am aware I have feet all the time. In many ways it is like the "padding" in the bottom of my feet have given up. Also you may remember that I find that my adidas "nubby" sandals and my adidas "Sambas" are the best "shoes" for me.

Alas as a Director of IT I can't seem to wear either of those on a regular basis.

What "dress up/work" shoes do you wear? I had been fond of Bostonians recently but they "blow out" too quickly for me. Clarke's while comfy have a sole split at the ball of my foot that sucks like an Electrolux.

I was walking past Florshiem shoes on Madison Ave recently and saw some Ecco's. They look comfy and strong.

What do you folks recommend?

(I can't wear pumps or thi hi boots! I get hit on too much!)

Oh, and I *highly* recommend gel heel inserts, regardless of if you're male or female, and regardless of the shoe (unless it is one of those backless shoes that shows the heel), if you have that "padding is worn out" feeling. And also I reommend wearing a very spongey flip flop around the house, especially on kitchen floors where there isn't any padding.

I like my heeled shoes because I prefer my weight distributed forward toward the toes. I am probably too tall to be
    • while those would look sharp with my Haggar Dress Slacks at 6'2" I'll tower over my date, Lynda, who is 4'11"! :)

      Heel inserts? hmmmm.
      • Well, my fiance wears these [housershoes.com], and he is very picky about comfy dress shoes. (Getting him to stop wearing tennis shoes with his dress clothes was a chore.) The Nunn Bush shoes also come much dressier, if these aren't dressy enough.

(You know, though, you missed the alternative solution. Having Lynda wear six inch stilettos to make up for your four inch heels. *grins*)
  • ...stilettos?

    Cheers,

  • Along with jeans and a t-shirt. I go on-site to clients and do all sorts of high end maintainence and repairs. My company hates the way I dress, but they love the work I do, so we've found the happy medium.

For my sneakers though, I wear Sauconys. They're comfy, but not good if you have flat feet (like me) so I have to be constantly aware of how I'm walking, otherwise it gets bad.

Normal people would just buy new shoes, but where's the fun in that?
    • get some Adidas sneakers! They have great arch support. Shhh. Go right now.
      • I have flat feet, too, and I find New Balance and the lower-end Asics models to be the most comfortable.

For dress shoes, I bought Dr. Shoel's shoes (yes, they make shoes, too). They're ultra-cheap (~$25 for a pair of size 13s), they last, and have built in gel pads. Wal-Mart sometimes carries them. I've also found that the shoes matter, but the socks I wear matter more. I don't wear standard thin dress socks. If you look around, you can find black cotton tube socks that are WAAAAAY more padded and comf
        • yeah I have been on the black tube sock thing since Bob's first came to LI and I got some Champion tube socks. When I go to get shoes the saleman is always like:

Are you going to wear _those_ socks?

And then I apply violence to his groin.
  • Huh? Yes - they were at a store called Kohl's, and I found them for $19. I am happy to say that I've worn two pair (one black, one brown) for almost a year now, without a blow-out, but I bought two pairs of each for the eventuality. (They are semi-formal slip-ons).

Basically, I'm happy to buy multiple pairs of shoes if the price is right and they fit. I have spent much more on shoes that fit, as well. I have EE 10 1/2 feet, so finding a "real leather" pair that fits is always an adventure.

    I typically

  • You get to wear SHOES to work?!

You must have one a them fancy-dancy PAYIN' jobs!!

But honestly, wearing thigh-hi's -- you're just askin' for whatever you get!

  • Well, the flashy web designers don't want me to point you to a specific Dr. Martens shoe, [drmartens.com] but that's okay. Though all three of my pairs (there was a closeout sale) provide utilitarian comfort for all-day wear, my Sketchers [skechers.com] are better, even though I'm apparently no longer hip enough to realize there's no "t" in Sketchers--if I ever was anyway. Three years old, they're still my most comfortable "presentable, dress/casual" shoes.

Mine are very similar to the Scanner. [skechers.com]

  • It'd look awfully imposing [bbc.co.uk] in board meetings, I'm sure.
  • I asked some of my friends what shoes they wear at work, and they recommended these [snaz75.com]. (Personally I'd go for the black, but red may be more your colour...)
  • Excellent shoe. Very comfortable, high-quality, long-lasting. Highly recommended.

makes some nice shoes as do both Florshiem and Red Wing.

You might also want to look at some of the specialty catalogs with law-enforcement equipment as some uniform standards require a dress-type shoe.

For any shoe you might want to look into Superfeet [superfeet.com] while they don't have gel they are some of the most comfortable insoles I've ever used and they make a huge difference when I'm on my feet all day especially on hard surfaces. I buy a pair for every pair of shoes I own including my bike shoes.

Badges? We don't need no stinking badges.
