Journal eglamkowski's Journal: qt 6

So, QT is a privately-held corporation, where all the stock is owned by employees and management, none of it is privately held. They don't franchise - all stations are owned and operated by the company directly.

So why the heck is it, then, that their prices vary so dramatically over even relatively short distances? On my commute to work I pass a number of stations and the prices can be 20 to 30 cents different as I travel east-west outside the perimeter. That's a huge price range just in general, even more so for just one company, all the more so given that company doesn't franchise.

Very odd.

Anybody have any ideas as to what's up with that?

  • I've never noticed that. The prices here in Phoenix are mostly the same from station to station and they are all consistently low

They also have the most friendly employees I have ever met in retail. It's really exceptional.

    • I miss them now that I've moved away from Phoenix. The closest one to me that I'm aware of is in Atlanta.

You're right, though. Everyone there is nice, the drinks are awesome (It's the best place to get iced tea on the road), bathrooms are clean, and the food is fairly tasty (for C-store food) and reasonably priced. Whatever they're doing, they should do more of it, and other companies should take note.

      • Yeah, I forgot to mention how awesome their drinks are. They have a huge selection of soda, but they also add other drinks in there too. I'm not a big tea drinker, but I do like coffee drinks. by wife and I like Frappacino's from StarBucks, but I actually enjoy QT's frozen cappacino more and it's only $.97. :-)

I apologize in advance for the horrible spelling.of frappacino and cappacino. I'm sure I got it wrong.

  • All the oil companies are in a cartel. They all do zone pricing regardless of ownership. Look at the other non-QT stations within a 3 block radius and you'll see less variance than you will between similarly branded stations a mile apart.
    • Yep ...

I've seen prices here vary as much as $0.25 between company owned stations in different parts of town. Nearby stations of other companies typically have similar prices.

Costco and Safeway are the only ones with pretty much the same prices at all of their stations in this area.
  • They aren't competing with QTs across town, they are competing with the Conoco or Exxon or Shell across the street.
