Stop doing stupid things like that.

What's the alternative? You're applying home thinking to large scale commercial enterprises. Not doing those "stupid" things becomes a problem that may not only be expensive, but could potentially also be unworkable with fridges potentially out for days or weeks due to lack of predictive / condition based maintenance, which typically requires close to real time data understood by people who know what the data means - i.e. you need to get the data out of the store.

Putting everything online is CHEAP.

Cheap is only one side of the coin, the other side is effective. As population and complexity increase the ability to manage something becomes far more difficult. Being able to predictively plan maintenance based on current operational conditions is almost essential when you have a fleet of potentially 1000s of commercial fridges across your stores in a city. Relying on locally identified problems and then doing a callout isn't just a case of being expensive, it's potentially unworkable with maintenance crews.

Routine maintenance / breakdown maintenance is the worst way to run any larger business compared to condition-based maintenance / predictive maintenance. Both of the latter require loads of data managed by people who understand data. The local store clerk won't have a clue.

How stupid can this be? Since when do supermarket refrigerators need to be controlled remotely? It's a real "WTF" moment.

Need is the wrong question. We don't need any internet at all for anything. It's a question of want. Centralised maintenance and predictive planning that is automated has driven down cost of ownership which is critical when you're running potentially thousands of fridges in a city.

And that's been my experience with AI so far. If I really screw around with it I can get it to do what I wanted to do but I could have just done it myself in the first place. And since I have to check all the work it's doing it's just not worth the effort.

I've been told if you put a bunch of effort into getting it to work it will work but what the hell is the point of that? Meanwhile eventually it's not going to be cheap and unless I want to spend 3 Grand on video card that can run one of the models I'm stuck paying through the nose...

I'm not sure I get what Torvalds is saying here either. Did I misread it? He said he gave AI The prompt and it did it but it was horrendous. Implying that it was worse than the work he did himself. What's the point then? If it can't solve the part I don't want to do and it's incredibly expensive doing that badly I just don't see the point... I guess it takes people who can't do a thing and makes them feel like they could do the thing. And I guess if you're a business man that's a good thing because you can theoretically expand the number of people you can hire to do a thing or just get rid of them all together plummeting wages.

But again, I don't see how that's a good thing either. Especially in a world where if you don't work you don't eat and people tend to start wars when they can't eat...
