I've also been here a little while (see six digit ID) and have worked on a pilot carbon sequestration well as a geologist. The methods, problems and associated infrastructure are out the door in terms of cost. There really is only wind and solar in combination with other renewables as you described as the solution to future energy. It's just getting over the momentum of entrenched fossil fuel interests.
And THAT will require a lot of energy on our part.
