Everyone currently posting here has it just a bit off. From the FDIC page linked a few posts above (with emphasis added):

The standard insurance amount is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each account ownership category.

A individual checking account and individual savings account only count together as one ownership. However, two people can have one individual account each, plus a third account with joint ownership.
