Comment why not the free options? (Score 2) 38

Sorry to all my U.S.A. friends, but this kind of news makes me kinda proud to not be American (as in: proud to not be part of all that lobbying that is eating away at a great country).

Come on, if you really want to teach using voxels, there are plenty of FREE options (https://ancillary-proxy.atarimworker.io?url=https%3A%2F%2Fedu.ihom.app%2Fen%2F, https://ancillary-proxy.atarimworker.io?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgithub.com%2Fedu-minetes..., etc.).

But I guess this does not sit well with plutocracy, sadly.

HD Transfer of Star Trek: TNG To Arrive This Year 267

psychonaut writes "Digital Bits have confirmed through sources at CBS Paramount that CBS are working on a high-definition transfer of Star Trek: The Next Generation. A four-episode Blu-Ray sampler disc is to be released later this year; the episodes featured will be the two-part pilot 'Encounter at Farpoint,' 'Sins of the Father,' and fan favourite 'The Inner Light.' On 2 September, LeVar Burton tweeted that he had stopped by CBS Paramount Television City to check the progress and was 'mindblown' by the conversion. TrekCore has an article with further details and an analysis of some of the technical hurdles involved in remastering these episodes."

UK University Making Universal Game Emulator 217

Techradar reports that researchers at the University of Portsmouth in England are working on a project to create a game emulator that will "recognise and play all types of videogames and computer files from the 1970s through to the present day." One of the major goals of the project is to preserve software from early in the computer age. David Anderson of the Humanities Computing Group said, "Early hardware, like games consoles and computers, are already found in museums. But if you can't show visitors what they did, by playing the software on them, it would be much the same as putting musical instruments on display but throwing away all the music. ... Games particularly tend not to be archived because they are seen as disposable, pulp cultural artefacts, but they represent a really important part of our recent cultural history. Games are one of the biggest media formats on the planet and we must preserve them for future generations."

Nothing new under the sun.
In Japan the problem has been known for ages as keitai manbiki or degitaru manbiki, meaning "Cell phone shoplifting".
They go to a shop and when they find an interesting article on a magazine, instead of buying the dead tree they take a pic of the page and then walk away.
