Comment My expierence (Score 1) 177

I work in IT for a large manufacturing company that has nearly 100 manufacturing and retail locations across the US. Most of the locations are remote (surrounded by cornfields). The company has been in aggressive growth/acquisition mode since I hired in a few years ago. I have been in charge of IT infrastructure for the new sites we turn-up. We utilize an outsourced contracted company for network cabling. That company employs contract workers. The reason for this is twofold: my company does not want to deal with 1099 forms for every contract worker, and my company wants a single vendor for all sites. In addition to this, my company has an outsourced (in-shore) helpdesk, which I also manage. The reason for this is that my company does not want the helpdesk people to be regular employees with benefits, that burden is shifted to to the outsourced company. As a direct employee for the company, I get the company benefits and perks, so it works for me.

Comment more to the story (Score 2) 173

There is more to the story than the 74% cable/satellite TV price hikes. People in the US are seeing price hikes on everything else, especially so in the following categories: health care costs, housing costs, and student loan costs. Also, people are increasingly seeing that there are other options that are free or cheap: rabbit ear TV, Netflix, Hulu, etc.

This happened on my 2016 Ford Fusion. I had bumper to bumper warranty, but the dealership said rodent damage wasn't covered under warranty. I had to replace the wiring harness and it wasn't cheap. The mechanic at the dealership said peanut oil was one of the materials used in the wire plastic coating.

Comment Cost is only 16% more than regular road (Score 1) 277

In the US, it costs $1 billion for a 17 mile road project where they are completely redoing the highway and adding a lane each way. (http://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/oakland/2016/08/15/i-75-rebuild-starts-monday/88638126/). With the added lane, that makes for 4 lanes each way for 17 miles. This makes 138 miles of one lane. 1 billion / 138 = $7.25 million per mile of regular road per lane. For this solar project, it is 5 million Euro for 1 km. The picture only showed this as one lane on one side of the road. 5 million Euro equals $5.22 million USD per mile. To go from km to miles, we get $8.4 million USD per mile of solar road per lane. Further breaking this down, it is about 16% more expensive to construct a mile of solar road than it is for regular road. Not bad.

Comment Less people will die of liver failure (Score 2) 294

This is not as "genuinely frightening" as the number of people that die of liver failure due to overdose or overuse of acetaminophen. The only difference between this "new" drug and the ones currently on the market is that this one does not contain acetaminophen. Old drug = hydrocodone + acetaminophen. This drug = hydrocodone only.
