Some interesting Lord of the Rings-oriented articles:

We are all nerds now
Guardian Unlimited, December 12, 2003
Could it be that there are more nerds today than there were before? If so, shouldn't we attempt to make friends with them sharp-ish, before they start bludgeoning us with plastic light-sabres or introducing viruses into our PCs? And then there is a further, more troubling possibility. Just what constitutes a nerd these days anyway? Might you conceivably qualify as one? Perish the thought, might I?

And, a less Happy article:

Are women just "Bored of the Rings?"
By CARYN JAMES
New York Times, December 21, 2003
The well-calculated hype and exaggerated praise (the New York Film Critics Circle last week voted "Return" best picture) has obscured what the series really is: an FX extravaganza tailored to an adolescent male's fear of sentiment and love of high-tech wizardry.

Fortunately, a Stout Madien of The West has already penned a fine rebutal.

  • But the rest.. I'm just not interested in romance stories. Seriously. I love movies to NOT have a romantic subplot, because i'm just not interested. I'd like to see a movie starring a heroine who doesn't have a love interest or sex appeal, who goes and has adventures only. Like a kung-fu flick with a female lead.

I'd like to read some more books that work that way, too.

    • This is one of the reasons I like Alien Resurrection (gasp!) and Kill Bill so much.:)
    • uhm, Tomb Raider? (first one's better than the second one... and the second one does have a mild love interest, but its cool, esp. in the end!)
    • I love the LOTR books, but you gotta admit that a couple thousand pages without a significant female character might cause some people to feel as though they aren't part of the story's intended audience.

Ummmmmm...Lady Eowyn of Rohan? I'd say that's a pretty significant character right there.

        "I fear a cage..." etc.

Strong female, wants to go out and seek battle and DIE WITH HONOR on the battlefield. You didn't see to much of that in the 1950's (or the "Middle Ages" for that matter).

In case you haven't read the books: Jackson didn't embelish Eowyn for the movie. It's all in there!

(Conveniently fails to mention that Eowyn settles down with Far
  • My wife's favourite book is the Lord of the Rings. She is an English teacher and has read thousands of books and keeps her own library of many of the great works of literature, as you might expect. She's been reading the Lord of the Rings since she was a child, and almost every year read it again. On Sunday we went to see the Return of the King. Obviously it wasn't identical to the book, but she loved it. She loved all three films in the trilogy. It's a fantastically well-written book, a marvellous story an
  • she really likes lord of the rings, both the movies and the books. she likes video games. she doesn't get excited about games as much as me, but she understands the fascination. she tends to like things with a role-playing or puzzle feature. i like that, but i also like just blowing stuff up.

it's a good thing that caryn james' happiness doesn't hinge on my companionship, because i couldn't be married to a woman who is unwilling to try to understand anything that isn't a 19th century love drama. it's o
  • ...are big fans of the LOTR movies (they are 21 and 17, so I think that they qualify as "women"). I regard this as a sign of successful parenting. :-) Neither read the books beforehand, though I tried to get them to do so (less successful on that front; neither is quite as enthusiastic a reader as I am).
