How To Handle Corporate Blackmail? 675

An anonymous reader writes "I have been in a software engineering position at a large company for approximately seven years. Recently, for a variety of reasons, I accepted a new job working for a local software company. I have given my employer three weeks' notice, instead of the standard two, as a courtesy. In return, it has been implied that, in spite my record of above-average performance appraisals and promotions, I will be marked as leaving the company 'on bad terms' if I refuse to extend my departure date further. With only three weeks remaining, I am hesitant to rock the boat by contacting our HR department, but this concerns me and seems like an extremely unethical practice. I live in an 'at-will' employment state, so I know that they have no legal recourse to keep me. I am concerned about the references they could give in the future; having spent a large majority of my career at this company, I will be dependent on them for references to verify my career experience. Has anyone ever run into this kind of situation before?"

Comment Re:Garda Commissioner (Score 1) 102

On the one hand, the Guards have already got enough power to screw over anyone they want, and they haven't done so.

Are you on the same island that I am? Ever hear of the McBreartys. Basically the Guards made the mistake of trying to frame a family who had the resources to fight back - God only knows how many families they use the same tactics with who don't have those resources. There was another spectacular case of Garda corruption that ruined the life of an innocent man whose name escapes me at the moment. He was only found innocent by a chance remark made in court in a different case.

Skype 5-way Calling Limit Cracked 427

BobPaul writes "It turns out when Skype limited 10 way calling to Intel Processors only it really was arbitrary! Maxxus has a patched version of Skype that allows 10-way calling regardless of the processor installed. There's also info about the patch: "The patch is the result of two phases: code analysis and design of the patch. The code analysis, or reverse engineering, reveals the relevant code block, which overrides Skype's limitation for Intel's dual-core CPUs. The patch design isolates the minimal set of instructions that need to be modified to cancel this limitation." Windows only so far."
