Instead of scanning the apps that I choose to install on my phone, why not just scan the apps they allow on their Play Store? Then, if people choose to install applications outside of the store, it'll be at their own risk. Also, scanning the app ONCE on their store makes more sense than redundantly scanning it millions of times on each users phone.
It's not just happening in the US. All the major carriers in Canada had initially denied having Carrier IQ on their phones (Rogers/Bell/Telus) but it has recently been found on the Rogers LG Phoenix.

Another interesting analysis with anonymity in the Internet age could be done with the Vancouver Stanley Cup riots from a couple of months ago. People were openly destroying vehicles and commercial property while knowingly surrounded by cell phones and professional photographers recording every move they made. Video and photos were uploaded in real time to the Internet, eventually assisting the police and the public to identify a large number of locals.
It was a bizarre case of cognitive dissonance where these criminals would pose in front of their crimes without a thought to the fact that they would be easily identified and charged with the said photo.
This will come in handy as I release all my LEGAL self created media as torrents through Pirate Bay. It's an excellent tool to help promote independent artist's work.
