Submission + - Apple loses patent retrial to VirnetX, owes $302.4 million (reuters.com)

chasm22 writes: A federal jury in Texas on Friday night ordered Apple Inc to pay more than $302 million in damages for using VirnetX Holding Corp's patented internet security technology without permission in features including its FaceTime video conferencing application.

Before all the yelling starts I'd like to refer everyone to Wikipedia's page about VirnetX and to the appeals court decision http://caselaw.findlaw.com/us-....

Submission + - Uber Hired Former CIA Officer in Probe of Lawsuit Opponent (nbcnews.com)

chasm22 writes: Todd Egeland had a long career with the CIA, serving in senior positions like chief strategy officer, chief of cyberthreat analysis and chief of counterintelligence assessments, according to his bio.

But Egeland, whose bio says he retired from the CIA in 2008, has been involved in an investigation for an unlikely paymaster — Uber, CNBC has learned.

Part of the problem is he apparently lied in order to gather information. The investigator allegedly falsely said he was compiling a profile of "up-and-coming labor lawyers in the United States."

Submission + - Human Go champion 'speechless' after 2nd loss to machine (phys.org)

chasm22 writes: The human Go champion said he was left "speechless" after his second straight loss to Google's Go-playing machine on Thursday in a highly-anticipated human versus machine face-off.

Lee Sedol, one of the best Go players in the world with 18 world championships, was grim and ashen after the game, which lasted more than four hours. "I'm quite speechless," he said at the press conference that was livestreamed on YouTube. "It was a clear loss on my part. From the beginning there was no moment I thought I was leading."

Because the number of possible Go board positions exceeds the number of atoms in the universe, top players rely heavily on their intuition, said Demis Hassabis who heads Google's DeepMind, the developer of AlphaGo.

Submission + - New technology can increase the bandwidth of WiFi systems by 10 times (phys.org)

chasm22 writes: Researchers at Oregon State University have invented a new technology that can increase the bandwidth of WiFi systems by 10 times, using LED lights to transmit information.

The system can potentially send data at up to 100 megabits per second. Although some current WiFi systems have similar bandwidth, it has to be divided by the number of devices, so each user might be receiving just 5 to 10 megabits per second, whereas the hybrid system could deliver 50-100 megabits to each user.

Submission + - Apple faces large penalties in EU tax probe

chasm22 writes: EU Regulators are apparently set to accuse Apple and the Irish government of entering into several sweetheart deals that left Apple with lower taxes than what it legally owed. If the ruling is upheld, Apple could owe billions in back taxes. Interestingly, it seems that the Irish government would actually get the extra money and suffer little for its part in the scheme. http://wallstcheatsheet.com/te...
