the ipad line up is too varied and confusing. theres multiple versions various numbers ipad air mini pro just ipad differt sizes and performance its a minefield. apple would do well to slim down their product offerings and make it make sense.

also is this not close to the size of the old normal ipad? so the mini is now a mid sized car, just like the real one.

There has only ever been one iPad mini model at a time. Across its eight generations, it has shrunk in every dimension and lost weight.

The iPad mini is not for everyone. For those of us it is for, Apple has been nailing it. One model getting ever smaller and lighter as it has grown in power and screen size.

I know the iPad mini isn't for everyone. It gets a lot of hate. But it's just right for me. I've been buying every release for a decade. Apple provides long support so I can trade them down to my kids. And then the oldest mini gets traded in when I get a new one.

It's one of those devices that Apple doesn't pay a lot of attention to. So it only gets updated every 2-3 years and is a nice jump every time. Makes you genuinely excited when the next one comes out.

Compared to my current mini 7, which my kid on my old mini 5 is really looking forward to taking over, the mini 8 will get me water resistance, OLED, thinner, lighter, better battery life. For me, it's great for an iPad you can carry in a pocket or read a book on. For my kids it's just the right size. I know there are other use cases where it's just right: home controllers, waiters, pilots, ...

I'm glad this thing exists.

We are all people. We all live on one planet. The more we live in different places, and the more we get to be around people living here from other places, the better it will be for all of us.

This is not a call for open borders. Maybe, one day, when we are united as a planet. However, within the pathways that exist today: let's get to know each other more!

Calibri is a font that MS created to improve readability in printed documents. That is why it's the default in things like Word now. The OG order to switch to it actually saved money and effort in that they didn't have to reset defaults on new PC deployments. But it looks like the administration sees the words "makes it easy" and immediately goes to "it's WOKE so it's BAD" and we get stupidity like this.

Ironically, Calibri has already come and gone as the default in MS applications such as Word. Bierstadt is the new default font, which MS renamed to Aptos when it made it the default. Check it out! It's my favorite default font from Microsoft to date.

For my overall favorite, have a look at iA's Duo font. It's a two-space font (not mono-space, not variable). They make it available under the Open Font License even if you don't buy iA Writer.

A Brother Color Laser printer is the correct answer. Laser, because you don't want the potential mess, expense, and finickiness of ink. I got B/W, which has served us well, but if I were to do it again, I would get laser. Kids love printed photos even if they are super shitty low quality. Give them some joy.

Brother has a good reputation, is cheap, widely supported, and since it supports Apple's AirPrint super easy to print to it from Apple devices without configuration. It just shows up.

There is one annoyance you have to get rid of, disable Deep Sleep, which requires a hidden menu. Otherwise you have to manually wake the printer up to print wirelessly every time:
General Setup -> Ecology -> Sleep Time -> BACK and DOWN* simultaneously to enter secret menu -> Deep Sleep Off

*on the popular models. Check for the secret menu code before ordering your specific device.

Don’t buy an EV unless you have access to reliable home charging. Part of the EV lifestyle is starting your day with the desired State of Charge (SoC) and you leave all the public L2 and DC Fast Chargers for travelers and visitors to your town because you shouldn’t need them.

While that philosophy might exclude certain people from buying EVs, it’s not like owning an EV is critical for survival. Any car will do, but if you get yourself into a situation where you can live the EV lifestyle then you buy an EV. Don’t buy one first, then try to solve the problem of how to reliably charge it.

I own an EV and a home. It would be trivial and cheap (thanks to electric company rebate) to add a home charger. I have not bothered yet. Charging is too readily available in my midwestern town of 100K pop to bother.

Everybody's situation is unique. For many, home charging may be necessary. But it's not a requirement.

Check if your employer provides charging. See if there's charging around your home or anywhere where you drive once a week anyway. That's all you need.

As they get older you can back off control in a gradual and sensible fashion. All the while family purchases and Apple subscriptions are shared across family members.

It's weird, but the Kindle Fire Kids, which is explicitly designed for child use, isn't nearly as good as using an iPad mini.
