Disputed Island Disappears Into Sea 460

RawJoe writes "India and Bangladesh have argued for almost 30 years over control of a tiny island in the Bay of Bengal. Now rising sea levels have ended the argument for them: the island's gone. From the article: 'New Moore Island, in the Sunderbans, has been completely submerged, said oceanographer Sugata Hazra, a professor at Jadavpur University in Calcutta. Its disappearance has been confirmed by satellite imagery and sea patrols, he said. "What these two countries could not achieve from years of talking, has been resolved by global warming," said Hazra.'"

White House Must Answer For Missing Emails 256

Lucas123 writes "A District Court judge this week ruled in favor of a Washington-based watchdog group, allowing them to question White House officials about missing emails involving controversial issues. The subjects include the release of the identity of a former CIA operative, the reasons for launching the war in Iraq and actions by the US Department of Justice. The group had filed suit [PDF] last May against the White House Office of Administration, seeking access to White House email under the federal Freedom of Information Act. The discovery ruling is bringing to light issues of email retention in businesses and other private organizations. We've previously discussed the White House's difficulties with email."

Comment Speakers (Score 1) 13

I hate to just shill for a brand name, but when I had my 5.1 setup I loved my aperionaudio speakers. Purchased 3.1 from aperion and used my old stereo speakers for the rear/surround. The satellites were the 2004 equivalent of the current Intimus 532-LR model. Avoid big subwoofers if you're in a small apartment — the ear can't tell the difference but the neighbors hate you more. I got the 12" (on sale, couldn't resist) when the 8" would have been fine, and the volume on that device was always set to within about 1 degree of zero, and I like my bass.

Speaking of which, some receivers have a "late night" setting (I think that's what it's called) which normalize volume spikes. This saves a lot of diving for the volume control when you're watching Aliens @10pm while the neighbors kids are sleeping upstairs. Damn that movie got loud.

RIAA Wants Artist Royalties Lowered 399

laughingcoyote writes "The RIAA has asked the panel of federal government Copyright Royalty Judges to lower royalties paid to publishers and songwriters. They're specifically after digital recordings, and uses like cell phone ringtones. They say that the rates (which were placed in 1981) don't apply the same way to new technologies." From the article: "According to The Hollywood Reporter, the RIAA maintains that in the modern period when piracy began devastating the record industry profits to publishers from sales of ringtones and other 'innovative services' grew dramatically. Record industry executives believe this to be cause to advocate reducing the royalties paid to the artists who wrote the original music."

Journal Journal: Fwd: Bush team in "meltdown" mode

from the rumours-on-the-Internets Department

This is circulating on a couple listservs. Someone I barely know vouches for its accuracy. Incidentally, there is no Mark Mehlman; it should be Ken Mehlman. (Names censored by me.)

The film presents the case of a family accused and convicted of having sex with children, and then presents evidence the court never heard that appears to clear them. The DVD has extra information and interviews.

Should they have been convicted?

Update: Photo is now gone from Yahoo, but I saved the picture and its page (page and the rest copied on the 12th). The dead Yahoo link, may still have original caption :
