Journal btlzu2's Journal: open up my eager eyes... (polling goin' on) 33

em's recent je with the Metallica lyrics brought out the horrific fact that I've never liked metal (music, c'mon, no easy jokes...johndiii, I'm looking at you). i suppose part of the reason why is that the guys in school who liked it seemed destined to be serial killers by the age of 39 when they finally got tired of dungeons and dragons. ;) there are other reasons though, i think i've given it a fair shake.

i like hard rock and even some metal influenced bands like the pumpkins and soundgarden.

so, what is your favorite genre? It'd be nice to pick one as if you were going to only be able to listen to one genre the rest of your life..but no hard rules. ;)

Mine would be Lithuanian Folk Polka/Hip-Hop fusion.

Nah, on second thought it'd definitely be Brit-pop/Rock.

c) classical
r) r&b
a) metal
p) world (reggae, latin, etc.)
chinese) jazz
popcorn) pop
qwerty) rock
zap) electronic (industrial, techno, etc.)

oh whatever, you get the picture. What is it?

  • I'm a fan of good music, whatever genre it might be put into.

My cd collection has everything from Pantera to Pink Floyd to Enigma to Mark Chestnut.* So I can't choose.

happy friday Roberto. Hope you have a good super bowl weekend.

    *country. Deal with it.
    • Hey I haven't posted a "Me too!!" post in awhile. I like all kinds of music. Even though I am not a huge fan of country, rap, or opera, amongst those there are artists I enjoy. I think my music horizons changed drastically back when I started downloading music; what better way to hear all kinds of artists that get zero airtime on the regular radio stations? Speaking of which, I should go order some music off my wishlist since I just got paid....
    • I like "old timey" country I think. Not the modern pop-country (just a bit here and there, but it's fairly trite IMO). Did you ever see O Brother Where Art Thou?. *that's* my kind o' country. the older stuff and bluegrass is sweet.

happy friday, happy superbowl to you too! :) Shawno.
  • Umm...British Rock or what-have-you. My favorite song ever in the entire world (for this nanosecond) is "Blasphemous Rumours", because I love hearing the word "Blasphemous" in a british accent.
  • You don't like metal.. but do you like Wood :D
Avant Garde , industrial , punk ,metal ,NYHC , Weird al music ;) polka inspired parody .
    • nyhc. yeah, depends on the era too. mid-to-late 80's. i was just listening to "my life" by sick of it all on my way in this morning. great song. i also was listening to gorilla biscuits... civ was cool back then. i like a lot of the "spin off" bands, especially in the straight edge scene, side by side, project x, youth of today, bold, and well judge is fookin awesome. the wolfpack!!!

anyway, what else do i like. i like a lot of stuff. i got huge into the whole east bay thing, crimpshrine, isocracy (later to
      • I was thinking- have you ever heard the Cardinal Sin?

I really like them, they're very together, although I could see being turned off by the vocals, but they do the exact opposite for me. I sort of think of them as similar to Small Towns, but probably because they did a split 7" called "There's No Place Like Minneapolis" (and there really isn't)(no really, CS's Oil and Water was the number one ep of 2005 according to punknews.org and they said "This is why the Midwest is great: Devoid of the musical trends

  • I have changing tastes in music. Right now I would say my favorite genre is vocal electronica.

  • DM, Erasure, Yazoo.

Confession, I initially thought Duran Duran were too "rock" because they used guitars.

This was in my black clothes only era. Didn't last long thankfully.

  • Metal. While it's not all I listen to (glances over at a JS Bach CD) it's the primary genre I'm interested in.

From Black Sabbath / Alice Cooper in the 70's to Ozzy Osbourne, Stryper, Iron Maiden, and Megadeth in the 80's into the 90's and into today... make mine METAL.

of course... they urge getting a hair cut, not drinking or smoking and have choruses like:

"raise your fists in the air, drug free!!!"

straight edge pride!!! set to a more metal-ish sound (without annoying superflouos guitar solos).

OK. Do they have any preview clips on the web or a website?

of course... they urge getting a hair cut,

        Noooooooo! No! No! :)

        not drinking or smoking

No smoking, as far as drinking... not very often. I have less than 10 alcoholic drinks per year.

        • throwdown's amazing haymaker [trustkill.com] record. check out the video... hehe... its pretty cool :)

they have a dvd documentary thing which is pretty interesting.

you'll also want to check out walls of jericho [trustkill.com] on trustkill as well. imagine a hardcore cross-over-metal band with a very pretty female vocalist/screamer. she's fucking harder than anyone... having seen them live... and how she just kicks the shit out of everyone... just a real treat.
  • I very much distrust and avoid favorites, but will play the game.

If I had to disappear into any one period of genre and could never come out, I think I'd pick 20th century hihg modernism, especially if I can bring Bernard Herrman's film scores along for the ride. Ives, Schönberg, Berg, Boulez, Webern, Stravinsky, Xenakis, Dallapicola, Ligeti, Nono, Schnittke, Messiaen, Takemitsu, Feldman, Crumb and many others, including the "serious" works of Frank Zappa. It ain't comfort music, but it can take a

  • Em I sent you some music... I hope you like it... check your mailbox. Oh by the way I use vorbis files... I hope you have a vorbis plugin installed if not I'm sure someone here at /. or I can show you how to get one.
  • His parodies are good AND funny. Rock On, Al!
  • I like Metallica, I am not yet 39, and I am out of doing D&D.

    So! Anybody for a meetup?

    Cheers,

  • I really enjoy the complexities of the music and that there are rarely lyrics. It makes it much easier to write to because I don't have someone else's words filling my head.

Now that I'm married I listen to a much wider repatoire of music thanks to the wife. A lot of harder edge alternative stuff. I find that those tend to have deep complexities to them as well.

One final confessional- I love bagpipe music. I never tip street musicians, but I gave a buck to a guy playing Beethoven's 9th Symphony on th

    • Oh, man. Love the bagpipes. It also helps that pipers are usually accompanied by drummers. :^) I went to a Presbyterian/Scottish college in the middle of a biggish city. Before they ran out of money to do so, they had a huge Scottish Country Fair on the campus every year. Bagpipers and highland dancers would come from all over to participate. There were traditional scottish games and food, and you could hear bagpipes blasting 'Scotland the Brave' from blocks away. It was great. Unfortunately, europe
      • That sucks that they cancelled it. When I was in the Bay Area they did a huge Scottish festival and had numerous Pipe and Drum bands. At the end they all got together, well over a thousand, and played Amazing Grace. I still get goosbumps remembering it. What made it even more poignant is half-way through they all cut our except for one lone Piper. Then, after a few measures or so, they all kicked back in simultaneously. Simply amazing.
    • classical music stimulates me too. when i'm reading or studying, i often pop in something (current favorite remains The Art of Fugue by Bach. Great stuff.

although, i must admit, jamming out to soundgarden, blur, or radiohead is more fun. :)
      • Bach is truly amazing. I love his stuff. Especially the fugues played on a pipe organ;-) It is also stunning to realize that all of his fugues, church pieces, and masses were only ever played once during his life!

I have a very tin when it comes to music, so I have never realy managed to jam to anything. *sigh* It frustrates my wife somewhat because I just can't hear with the same deptht hat she can. She processes each different thread of music and the lyrics and how they relate. I just get an amalg

  • electronic, experimental, dj, blah blah.

i like most variants of IDM. i like dub, but my preference tends away from the dub that is more like electronic music with the trappings of reggae. i like drum 'n' bass, and tend toward the techstep/terrorstep end of that spectrum. i like what used to be called industrial. i like EBM, but i think it and a lot of its good sub-genres are full of bad artists. darkwave and futurepop can be good as long as the artist isn't concerned with fitting those molds. i like o

    I LOVES me a samba.

  • I'm not a big genreist. I have to say I belive in the artist/auteur theory. It's the same way I think about movies or books: I attach more to creators. And the benefit is that then I don't become encumbered by expectation of "the style of music these guys make" instead buying into their approach. Now this doesn't always work: a good example is when Adult. went from an electro-punk outfit to a mediocre dance-punk outfit (their "new direction") I blanched. But my favorite artists are polymaths and in th
