Boots theory of economics. If people had economic literacy they'd throw a fit, but they do not. Also, buying in bulk is fine and dandy, but it's rough when a trip to costco runs $300 at the register and a trip to dollar general runs $30, even if you're paying more per/lb/item
Windows 10: Boots, fan stays quiet, battery lasts 10 hours idle/document work/browsing.
Windows 11: Boots, fan never shuts up, battery lasts 4 hours idle (even going full e-reader mode idle, nothing loaded but the desktop), fan screams the whole time.
Linux: Fan almost never even starts up, battery lasts 15 hours browsing/doing stuff, 20 hours e-reader mode.
Windows has too much overhead, background junk, and spyware.
It's your word against theirs. You need expensive lawyers to fight DUI's. All the COP has to do is falsely accuse and ticket someone driving a poverty car who they know won't be able to fight back.
Game theory. They possess the data. Paying them not to release it doesn't guarantee they delete it but does incentivize them to come after you for more payments NOT to release it, like, rent seeking. Best not to pay and let it leak, financially. Mitigate all actionable intel first of course (account numbers, etc).
If your essential service can be taken down by ransomware, you need a better backup and recovery strategy. If we get popped with ransomware we can nuke the system and have it rebuilt inside 5 min from either a snapshot, or a completely clean rebuild.
I don't need to be an expert to know that prime numbers have no pragmatic function, and therefore are a waste of energy to pursue. You can apply this logic to anything else where pragmatism is absent.
I got my gas heater installed for $1000. At 60c/therm it beats resistive heaters by a huge margin in efficiency/$ . Same guy quoted a heat pump for heat but it was like 15k. It wouldn't amortize in my ownership period, so made zero sense.
Why not run Folding@Home? At least that produces meaningful results. Factoring the largest prime number will not, in any way, help humanity, science, or math, and is an even worse waste of power than mining crypto (which at least helps keep the network/blockchain secured)
The mini was selling. It made Apple millions in profits. It's just that's not enough for Apple. So they cut their nose off to spite their face and now every phone on the fucking market is too big to fucking hold one handed.
