Comment Wrong definition of death (Score 1) 128

They're confused with the definition of death. In my opinion, the best definition comes from cyronics: Information Theoretic Death.

WRT these pig brains, they're experiencing iscemic damage that may result in infodeath, but it's a slide into that vs a singular moment of death. Of course some cells still work, only 4 hours passed from loss of blood flow.

It is junk science, some creatures can indeed be frozen and revived because of unique properties of their physiology. Humans cannot.

So far it has been proven that organs can be cryopreserved and restored to full function. A rabbit kidney was extracted, cryopreserved to liquid N2 temps, re-warmed, and implanted into a living rabbit. It survived solely on that kidney for 48 days until it was euthanized to study the kidney. Physical and biological aspects of renal vitrification

In fact, by decapitating this girl and digging her brain out of her skull, they've guaranteed she is forever dead.

Here's a concept that you may not have heard of before: Information-theoretic death.

EPA Knowingly Allowed Pesticide That Kills Bees 410

hether writes "The mystery of the disappearing bees has been baffling scientists for years and now we get another big piece in the puzzle. From Fast Company: 'A number of theories have popped up as to why the North American honey bee population has declined — electromagnetic radiation, malnutrition, and climate change have all been pinpointed. Now a leaked EPA document reveals that the agency allowed the widespread use of a bee-toxic pesticide, despite warnings from EPA scientists.' Now environmentalists and bee keepers are calling for an immediate ban of the pesticide clothianidin, sold by Bayer Crop Science under the brand name Poncho."

Traffic-Flow Algorithm Can Reduce Fuel Consumption 328

thecarchik writes "New projects from German automakers Audi and BMW promise to ease congestion simply by looking at traffic signals and driving style, in an effort to smooth the flow of traffic. Through a test course in Munich, vehicles were able to post phenomenal fuel efficiency gains simply by adjusting the timing of traffic lights depending on traffic volume — to whatever speed provides a so-called 'green wave' of four or more synchronized signals."

Submission + - Pluto Probe Makes Discoveries at Jupiter (jhuapl.edu)

Riding with Robots writes: No, it's not an accident due to a metric-to-English-units error. In February, the New Horizons probe passed through the Jupiter system on its way to Pluto, and we saw some spectacular pictures. Now, the science teams have published detailed scientific results, along with new images and movies. an overview is now online. The probe's instruments saw clouds form from ammonia welling up from Jupiter's lower atmosphere, and heat-induced lighting strikes in the polar regions, and fresh eruptions on the volcanic moon Io. New Horizons also captured the clearest images ever of the tenuous Jovian ring system, where scientists spotted clumps of debris that may indicate a recent impact inside the rings, or some more exotic phenomenon.
