Journal bethanie's Journal: Entertainment Comes in Many Forms 10

First, the movies I've watched since the last time I wrote about movies I'd watched -- not too many of these, since we've had other priorities that took precedence.

Robin Hood
I didn't watch this one, but Kiddo and Hubby did. Hubby said it was *really* bad. I don't remember it being that way, but then again, I grew up listening to the LP vinyl story and was just psyched to see the full-length film, so my judgment may have been clouded. Apparently, it didn't hold Kiddo's interest very well, either. I think maybe for the next Disney flick we'll try The Rescuers, and see if that goes over better. Uh, I guess I'll give it 3 stars.

Bruce Almighty
Cute idea, weakly executed. Morgan Freeman was by far the best part of this, followed by that guy from The Daily Show. I guess I'm just not a Jim Carrey fan. Jennifer Aniston can be good, but unfortunately her character in this film is incredibly flat. She was obviously cast for her potential box office draw. Three stars because I didn't NOT like it, it just wasn't very good.

Ocean's Eleven (home collection)
Yes, again. Hubby laughs at how often I watch this. But dammit, it's good entertainment for an afternoon when you're pretty much stuck on the sofa.

Jackie Brown (home collection)
Damn, this is a good movie. Probably one of my favorites ever. Love the music, love the brilliant casting & colorful characters, love the story, love the dialogue... If you want to know my Southern California, watch a Quentin Tarantino movie. It's never really beautiful -- mostly pretty grungy, short concrete buildings and suburbs. And there are places that are just cheesy/cool, depending on your frame of mind. Like so impossibly over-the-top cheesy that you take your friends there to hang out and make fun of it AND yourselves. That's SoCal in my mind. Anyway, I love this movie. 5 stars, easy.

Wonder Boys
This one is my pick of the week. I've decided that I just plain like Michael Douglas, particularly in comedies. It's a fun movie -- spins kinda of out of control, but has fun along the way. Some smart humor, which I enjoy. Robert Downey Jr. is at his best when he's smarmy like this. This is one that definitely makes me interested in reading the book that it was based on. Four stars.

And for more entertainment, Squirt has officially regained and surpassed her birthweight as of last Tuesday (at just one week of age!!). I'm feeling particularly validated, because they usually expect breastfed babies to reach this landmark by TWO weeks of age. Guess my bodacious ta-tas are gettin' the job DONE! :-)

More good news comes from MY doctor -- I was released to drive as of yesterday (Thursday)!! This means that I am not going to be a prisoner in my own house (except when Hubby's around to give me a ride) for a full month as we had expected. It also means that, since I will be available to shuttle her to and fro, Kiddo gets to keep going to preschool through the end of the summer session, which will definitely help ease the transition -- she *loves* playing with the other kids (almost all girls) in her class. I'm glad she doesn't have to give that up just yet.

Hubby's birthday was at the beginning of this month. We didn't make a huge deal about it 'cause we were in the midst of still recovering from birth -- I had planned ahead and bought him a book. My folks sent him a really beautiful pocket compass, and he expressed a modicum of remorse that it would have been *really* cool if they'd gotten him a GPS locator. So I told him that he should get one for himself for his birthday, 'cause he's investigating the feasibility of setting up a Wireless ISP where we are, and it'd be useful. I also expressed enthusiasm for using it for some geocaching with the kids -- not that this will happen any time soon, of course. He was in bed last night getting a satellite lock there. Yes, I am married to a geek.

Finally, I think that a voice contest sounds like a lot of fun. Let's make sure we get a list of participants as soon as the contest is posted this time, shall we? Fun fun fun!! :-)

  • He was in bed last night getting a satellite lock there.

Can't say I blame him. I would want to know the exact location were all sorts of magic happens.

  • I browsed out and found a Bruce Campbell movie, Bubba Ho-Tep that got 7.8 out of 10 on the reviews. Have you seen or heard of this one?

I am generally a fan of Bruce's stuff so I was wondering what this would be like...

    • I watched it last night. Well done movie, but heavy on the drama, with some thriller added to it. I've nothing against dramas, but this one didn't hold my interest enough. In four or five places I was skipping forward in ten second chunks until it moved on with itself.
  • I am ging to watch The Godfather. I read the book. I have seen Goodfellas 463 times. I watch the Sopranos and I have followed Fat Tony all through Springfield.

I'm actually looking forward to this. The Godfather II comes next week.
  • I've seen so many variations. I'm guessing based on "Rescuers" being next that you mean the old Disney classic. If so, I don't remember it really standing out as one of their better movies.
  • Guess my bodacious ta-tas are gettin' the job DONE! :-)

As if there ever was any doubt!

Out of curiousity though, why do newborns lose/regain weight? Just the adjustement of a new way of feeding?

    • There are a couple of reasons. First, some of what they arrive with is fluid, due to the fact that they've spent nine months in water-world, and as well due to a few of Mom's hormones they arrive with. (Actually, newborn baby boys are often quite studly looking upon arrival--sometimes alarmingly so. Their standard equipment is swollen due to those same hormones and fluid. They get more proportional and baby-like after a day or two.) Second, Mom's bodacious ta-tas require some adjustment as well. For a day
  • A contest list would be good, but unfortunately, it would make it kind of easy to guess who the new comers are. Maybe you're referring to something else?

I'm happy to read that the baby is doing well.
  • The Elegant Universe is EXCELENT. I loved it. I wish I knew where my copy was... I loaned it to someone, and she said she gave it back, but I haven't seen it. Not that that proves anything, I can't find my Girl Genius comics, either, and I didn't get them that long ago...

    Voice contest?
