Journal banky's Journal: OK, I give the fuck up. Do I want a PS3, an XBox 360, or Wii 31

I seriously can't make heads or tails of this shit any more.

Last week, my thought was, Well I guess I'll end up with a PS3 cause that's where all the games will be, anyway, right? I mean, it's the Playstation.

Now it looks like, who the fuck knows? Maybe they'll not get that much exclusive, anyway.

And what about the whole Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD thing? MS is hard for HD-DVD. I thought Blu-Ray would win, but if no one buys a PS3, then, maybe not?

And Wii... Aren't they really targeting casual gamers like me? Or, not? Who the fuck even knows.

Fuck, I just want to play some stupid games. This is too much like work.

  • After much consideration.
  • All this progress is great if you have the time, and certainly the money, to have a proper go at it. I initially bought an Xbox, because all my friends had PS2s, so whenever I was jonesing for some GT3, I had my choice of hangouts. I'll probably go for the Wii this time around, not for the price or because I'm a casual gamer, but because I think I have a better chance with that of suckering non-gamer friends into becoming casual gamers, because I find as I get older, the social aspect of gaming is becomin
    • This is why I go Nintendo. My wife and I sat down for some competative mini games on Mario Party last night. For 1/2 hour she was saying "Play it again" or I was saying "This time I'll win" and it was just the simple tetris-like game. You can't do that on other games because Nintendo is the only one designing games that can do that.

I'll have to save up for quite a while, but I plan to have a Wii. Metroid looks amazing and i can't wait to try the pointing controller thing.

  • Its for casual gamers, and actually has some freakin revolutionary shit! The whole wiimote thing looks pretty sweet, and I'm sold on it. I think it'll be the 'next big thing'.
  • I'm sick and tired of all this shit. I don't give a fuck about blu-ray and all this other mumbo-jumbo, and I don't give a fuck about "exclusives". They can cram all the techno-babble down my throat, I'm not going to be impressed by ANY of this.

Remember when consoles were about having fun and not OMFG teh grafx is teh RUELS? Controllers had less then 10 buttons back then, and it actually made the games playable. (If I have to play this Tony Hawk shit once more I will fucking get a seizure.)

    Modern consoles su
    • This was a great, troll.

First off, you are wrong on both counts (1) new games aren't fun and 2) it is INDEED an antipasto!).

I would give you points and counter points, but WTF, this is teh internuts.
  • Wait two years for titles and problems to shake out.

Note, that I say this with an N64 currently sitting under my desk at work and a PS2 bought two years after they were already out at home.

Especially if you buy Sony, because PS-Teh First had problems with the early rev of CD drives- you could only play them upside down (my friends got burnt by this). and PS2 had issues if you played them on their side (I did NOT have this problem). You know what? Let Sony work out its stupid manufacting problems on SOMEO
    • Ding ding!

Personally, I'm perfectly happy with my PS2 and I'll be holding off on any "next-gen" system for awhile. I don't have an HDTV yet, so I won't be able to take full advantage of the new systems anyway. I'd like to see the whole Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD thing shale itself out first as well.

Just like PSX games were still being released well into the PS2's life, I suspect that there'll be no shortage of PS2 titles available for at least the next couple of years.

I don't have an HDTV yet,

Oh, good point. I don't have HDTV anything, so I don't care. Perhaps those that got 'suckered' into buying an HDTV do indeed want the newer stuff that can support it to make their HDTV worth-while.

I'm not really bashing HDTV. I think someone who's made the investment may have more reason to upgrade sooner rather than later. So it is actually an important point.

    • Early reports say that while the Wiimote is "revolutionary", it's also waay too difficult to play metroid; I watched a 10 minute clip online of someone bitching about how hard the controls are. So unless smashing the "Wiimote" against the wall repeatedly is your idea of fun... you might want to wait.

I've heard the exact opposite. People who were never good at FPS find that the new 'nanchuka' remotes are more 'natural' feeling, and they were much better in the game.
I'm guessing someone who is fantastic

I remember bitching about mouselook always being on until I got the hang of it, then I found out how much better it was

Well, you'll be the one, months from now, telling me wether I should Wii or not! I won't have to worry about hearsay.

/Is it bad that I don't know what mouselook is? ;)
  • i agree. which is probably why the Wii...i mean nintendo revolution will be the most popular.

    • Does that game not play on the PC? I haven't owned a console since the PS1, and I can play games just fine.

Agreed. Playing PC games is to me like ... uh ...

Ok I don't really have a good analogy.

But the notion that I should regularly open the goddamn machine up, and diddle with its internals, not to mention maintain a general-purpose operating system, that is not designed and built for games, etc.

What's that about? I just want to play games.

So no, the idea of keeping a "Windows/Game machine" handy irritates me. It's another expensive thing to explode. The PS2 has been a faithful companion for several years. Never
        • I'm the opposite. I hate console controllers and very much prefer a mouse/keyboard interface for games. And I presumed you own a PC because you were on Slashdot(of course, I forgot about the whole "Mac" thing but Macs can now run Windows too)

I don't really like playing games on my PC. There, I said it.

Now, y'see that's a really tempting statement to agree with. But it falls down on one obvious failing. You can't play the greatest game of all time [thangorodrim.net] on a console. You can't play Serious Sam or UT on a console either.

  • N64 beats crap out of PS1, unless you consider FMVs a good substitute for game play.

I haven't gotten much of a chance to play with my GameCube, but the thing is REALLY cute. The discs alone are adorable.

Wii of course. Duh. It is the only one that is halfway affordable (I think someone at Sony forgot that consoles are supposed to have a cost BENEFIT over home computers...) and I will borrow my Nephew's X360 to play Halo 3. :)
  • I'm planning on buying a Wii at launch and I'll wait for a year or two before considering an Xbox360 - and then only if there are some compelling games available for it. The PS3 just doesn't come into the equation, because I am not a hardcore gamer.

ATM I have a Gamecube and an Xbox - I was late to the Xbox market and only bought it because there were a couple of games I wanted that weren't on the GC. There is nothing exclusive to PS2 that I am even remotely interested in. I don't play games often, and when
  • Two words:

    Library Titles

Downloadable classics for your entertainment. Between the new games with novel interfaces and new editions of old games with novel interfaces -- Mortal Kombat with the Wiimote? How would it even work? -- the Wiimote should be worth it.

Honestly, I could give a shit about next-gen DVD. I have a nice 32" TV with YPbPr input for my progressive scan DVD player. It supports 480p. That's all the quality I'll have for some time. I don't buy movies, I rent them. I have Netflix. I will not us

I will not use Blu-ray or HD-DVD until my TV, DVD Player, and Netflix support them. So, um, not real fucking soon.

You don't think the industry at large is gonna start moving that shit? I mean adoption times on new gear are dropping, right? More and more regular folk are becoming early adopters.
