Comment How much will heating costs go up? (Score 0) 158

While it's nice to have solar on the roof, you lose (and gain) a lot of heat through your roof from the sun. $1k/yr savings may not offset the extra cost of heating that will be now required. Factories had the same problem when they were required to switch from incandescent light bulbs to CFL. Their heating bill was surprisingly increased.

Additionally, don't solar panels deteriorate over time? So it may be $1.1k savings in the first year, but $1k the next, and so on. Not to mention how the panels are attached to the roofs would be a source of leaks that you as the homeowner now have the pleasure of addressing.

What difference does it make whether it passed IRB? They could have implemented it at home outside of research. Just because they're students doesn't make it required to go through any sort of research review board. This technology is coming, the question is what are we as a society going to do about it? Though to be fair, it is already in existence at airports and many places in public.

Now they will get all the Android users to install their tracking software to help them keep track of the AirTags with a whole lot more devices. I would guess most people would install the app and keep it installed on their Android phones. Then they now have more nodes in the swarm to keep track of their devices (AirTags). Win for them, maybe not for you.

Didn't they make a comment like "Cloudflare's CEO has chimed in to say that its service isn't to blame." last time there was some big issue, then the following week it happened to them? Or was it the other way around? Either way, one would think they would learn from their own mistake (or other's).

I think GP is referring to the fact that a public ledger is not rocket science to sift through and trace to a single individual. Especially when Coinbase & Co. require US citizens to provide their SSN so IRS can keep track easily. Just because it's not worth tracing yet, doesn't mean it is not coming. Then those who avoided paying taxes will get to pay backtaxes with interest.

Comment How about sharing code? (Score 0) 89

The authors should be required to post their code on github or another public way of sharing their algorithms. I've seen other students at my school's AI research purposely implement other author's algorithms in a sub-optimal way to show that their research yielded better results. It's sad. What has "science" become?
