Journal asv108's Journal: F9-11 and the Kerry Morass 2

As you've probably heard a million times today, Michael Moore's movie did extremely well at the box office. The movie was the top film of the weekend, making around $21 million, which is more than any documentary has ever made total.

The amazing thing about the figure is the number of theaters. F9-11 made 21 million in only 868 theaters. Compare that to dodgeball which made 18.5 million in 3020 theaters. The theater average for a top ten movie is 2566 theaters, yet F9-11 was number one with 866. On a gross/theater analysis, the movie made about 25k/theater compared to 7k/theater for the #2 movie "White Chicks."

I wouldn't be surprised if this movie is number 1 next week, since it will probably show on a lot more screens. I have not seen the movie yet. I really don't have a burning urge to see it, but if I have the time I will definitely go. Its like my one older Uncle said, "I already hate Bush enough as it is, I don't need to see a movie to hate him any more." The amazing fact behind that statement, is that my Uncle was a die-hard supporter of the Republican party through the 50's -> 80's. He was even invited to Regan's 1981 inaugural because of all his support.

The popularity of the movie and the growing hatred of Bush has brought another topic to my attention. It's amazing that Kerry is not killing Bush. I think the current numbers show how weak of a candidate John Kerry actually is, even though he is doing better than Clinton in 1992 and Regan in 1980. Given the circumstances, Kerry should have a double digit lead in the polls.

Kerry better start making some moves pretty soon, or the Bush camp might be able to squeak this one by. The fact is, a lot of the people who will be voting Kerry come November will be voting against Bush, not really for Kerry. If Bush has a major rebound in the "good news dept." it could be major trouble for Kerry.

  • Sorry, but F911 won't be the top movie this week...

Spider-man 2 comes out on Wednesday, and will surely blow $21mil out of the water. Critics are expecting it to gross $100 million on the July 4th weekend. It'll probably be a healthy number 2, but not #1 again.

I would look for F911 to gross $60 million by the end of July.
