Journal alien_blueprint's Journal: When Slashdot and real life collide 2

The other week I met someone in "real life" that I already knew from Slashdot. This has never happened before.

This happened in the context of a party - TheFink was one of the guys manning the BBQ (there's always two or three), so I actually had to negotiate with him to get my food cooked without knowing who it was. Later, someone mentioned that he worked for company X here, and it all clicked. Suddenly I *knew* this person, who was previously just an anonymous yet helpful wielder of BBQ tongs. It's like the much overused example of the drawing of a cube where you suddenly see it from an entirely different perspective.

Anyway, our host, whose Slashdot ID I do not know, expressed his despair when I said, "Oh, I know him from Slashdot, already." "That's sad!", I think were the exact words :)

I imagine this sort of thing happens all the time in the US. I also wonder how many times it happens and people don't actually realize that they've already "met."

  • Knowing our host, I suspect there was an extra word or two in there. Likely to have been expletives, at that. ;)

Yes, it could have been any number of variations on that particular theme, but "sad-ness" was definitely the core of the message.

Human beings were created by water to transport it uphill.
