Comment Re: Universal fix (Score 1) 191

I boot the installer and dd | gzip the whole disk first thing. Then I can remain with Windows if I give the computer away at some point. Although, the last couple machines I have kept until they totally died. Disk space is so cheap now that keeping a 20gb image around costs less than buck.

Comment Re: Healing two birds with one stone (Score 1) 20

Talk about complicated solutions. A doctor in France invented a device that works just fine over 200 years ago. It has no parts moving at relativistic speeds, and once built, operates for pennies per use. Perhaps we can tech it up a bit and add a neutral network that lines the neck up properly for minimal splatter.

Comment Re:Why "if"? (Score 2) 164

I think this has a pretty clear answer. Once they start enshittifying the products to the point that people are no longer willing to ask, either because it takes 10 queries to get an answer, or because you will have to watch 60 seconds of ads to get your 2 line answer. While it is free, everybody is enthralled by the psychic. Once the collection plate comes out, most people will leave the tent.

Comment Just another tool (Score 0) 42

No, it works. But it is just another tool that they use. The better the tools work, the more likely radiologists are going to find issues, and earlier. This means they are then more valuable for diagnostic work, and the demand is even higher. Until we start addressing the cause of high cancer rates, the need for diagnosis and cures will keep going up.

Comment bit rot (Score 2) 34

It seems like this will be subject to even more bit rot than standard tapes, since there will be actual bacteria trying to rot it. I have a 55-year old DNA tape that seems to have suffered some severe damage (due to an unrelated drinking problem). Can this straighten it out and get the processor running at full speed again?

Comment Limited resources (Score 2) 111

Just like organic vegetables, there are not enough resources to feed everyone on the planet with organic chicken. Developing a cultured meat industry could provide access to high quality meat for many more people. I'm not saying that is what will happen in our ensh!ttification society, but it at least makes it possible.
