Comment Ride a bike, live longer (Score 1) 79

Not only does it keep you fit and well, but also If you use your own energy to shift yourself then you can travel 5000 km a year with no emissions at all effectively traveling at faster than light speed when compared with adding the time taken to exercise onto that of doing a commute with a motorised vehicle.

Comment Conservatives will never fix this (Score 4, Informative) 125

The current administration in the UK will not do anything unless it enriches their friends. Unfortunately, the main opposition party also has a completely incompetent leader. I expect the UK to continue its slide into sewage soaked irrelevance for another decade before things can turn around. And yes, they've even stopped treating sewage before discharge into rivers or the sea in order to let companies make higher profits.

Comment Why is internet access so slow in the USA ? (Score 1) 131

I live in the Netherlands. The cheapest option for internet access that it's possible for me to have at my home is now 100 Mb/s download / 30 Mb/s upload. That costs €58 per month. For an additional €5 per month we get 1 Gb/s. I speed tested it just now and that's the rate that I currently have as I type here. But in reality, we always never actually need 100 Mb/s

This appears to be just yet another of your crazy Republican politicians trying to dream up a distraction rather than doing their job. In this case they will do anything at all, including indulging ridiculous alien spaceship stories, rather than investigate the obviously genuinely corrupt guy that they made president.

So, there's actually nothing of real interest or value to see here at all. It's just yet another story about a privileged rich arsehole doing more than average to fuck up the planet that he shares with 8 billion others. This is an example of the worst of us doing the worst things. It's Big Brother in space and serves no purpose except self-aggrandizement.

“This is a unique project, the first wind farm in the world powering producing oil and gas installations.”

Instead of putting a few wind turbines next to their oil and gas installations Equinor could have stopped profiting from pumping oil and gas. But hey here's another "solution which sort of sounds green and allows the company involved to pretend that they're something other than climate criminals. It will of course make very little difference to the environmental destruction due to this company.

A rather tragic aspect of our society is that we promote the most awful people to the top. Musk is one of the very worst, but the same personality aspects could be seen in Jobs. Awful people who really do not deserve any respect.

Anyway, I was quite active on Twitter, but scaled back in April and have completely stopped now. I'm not going back to using a site run by that psychopath.

It's not obsolete, it just works - every single day without any problem at all. It's also not got a broken screen, which appears to be a problem with smart watches, nor has it gone wrong in any other way despite being worn in the shower, for swimming, outdoors in the hottest (35 C) and the coldest (-20 C) weather, while hammering fence-posts, soldering, getting covered in oil doing maintenance etc. etc.

However since Snowden's revelations we've known for certain that everything that we do online in countries outside the US is intercepted by the US. I'm really not happy about that either. But I can't honestly see how China is a bigger threat to my privacy than is the USA, especially given that I do not use tiktok.

How can it take so long ? Do you live in a country which doesn't have proper electronic banking ?

I run a business in the Netherlands. Customers from all over Europe pay into my business account. These payments come from a wide range of different banks in 27 different countries. In almost all cases their payments appear in my account instantly, or at least within a second or two. Occasionally it might take a minute, presumably because more transactions than normal are taking place at once.

And that all happens without the horrendous environmental footprint of bitcoin. It's a "solution" looking for a problem to solve, and meanwhile it's trashing the planet. Just stop please.
