Journal Xerithane's Journal: A little bit of success and a lot of failure. 19

Luckily the failure has to do with hardware, and not my idiocy. After the SSL shit I've been back to working on mod_perl and MagicBox. The new version of MagicBox impelements a new template engine, a data broker engine, as well as a revamped object system. The only thing that is the same is the session management. I'm also writing more documentation so people can actually use it. Woo.

Girlfriends laptop fizzled out during an upgrade to Mdk9.1. I think the hard drive was bad, and we just hadn't rebooted nor really used it in a long time. So, I gave her my laptop (which sucks, and I feel bad) to use. Gnome was running about 3 times faster than KDE so it's using Gnome right now. As long as she can type in Japanese and use Mozilla she's happy, so it all works out. I've gotten the approval to get a PowerBook to replace it after we get back from Japan. My printer finally printed something in the way it was supposed to. It's working great off of my machine, but this isn't exactly the best solution as I reboot into Windows (BF1942, and VPN access) so it'll be unavailable during those times. Oh well, maybe I'll mess with it under Gentoo a bit more.

The nerdfarm.org server died during a "routine upgrade." Colo people are (hopefully) diligently working on resolving the issues. Not sure when it will be back up again, but hopefully soon. Very soon. Without me losing any data.

I played Clue in Japanese on Saturday night. It's an interesting game in Japanese, and I won. It was Miss Scarlet, in the Billiard Room, with the Revolver. I drank a lot of Sake, but didn't get drunk. That is an irritating event. It was a good weekend, though, even admist all the hardware failures. Had a decent time with some friends on Saturday (See, I'm not antisocial) and got some good code done. Now I just need nerdfarm.org to go back up so I can start writing the nerdfarm code.

    • I used to really like Scooby Doo until that little bastard Scrappy came along and ruined it. I haven't had a thing to do with Scooby since, other than an occasional "Ruh Roh!"
    • The funny thing about Clue is that we're all adults. My GF is the youngest at just shy of 22, and the oldest was 36. I'm the CS engineer, one guy is a systems integrator, and the other guy is a graduate student for mollecular and cellular biology.

Interesting mix to play Clue with.

        • Wow. That's some major brainpower. Were the answers easily deduced?

I got it on my 8th guess. I started out right next to a room which I had the card of, and just figured out relatively quickly (3rd turn) who did it and with what. Everybody else (except for one other) knew the weapon but not the person (I'm a clever SOB) and then I got lucky on the room because it was the next room over.

My GF absolutely loves Clue, Backgammon, and Gin but loathes Mahjong and chess. (Mahjong and Gin are very similar, to

            • The problem with pure brainpower games is that they aren't pure brainpower. They are usually trivial memorization or exposure to cultural events that I usually have not been privy to. I know a lot of useless shit, but when it comes to Trivial Pursuit or Jeopardy there is a lot of stuff I just don't know. I've not been exposed to a lot of "common" knowledge (common amongst scholarly types) so I find myself at a disadvantage.

But I can beat all those motherfuckers at chess.

                • My beef with Cranium is their retarded advertisements. Have you ever seen those? They're horrible. It's an affront to anyone with intellect.

A big part of those games is that they are English-centric as well, and a lot (majority) of the people I hang out with are Japanese. It puts a damper on those style of games.

                    • Jeez. Qualifier after qualifier. "Requires trivial knowledge", "I only hang out with Japanese folk". What good is being a white, American male if you're not gonna act like one!

I didn't say "only" -- I said mostly. I hang out with 2 Americans. However, my "core" group is me, GF, and 2 Japanese guys. So, that is just about only... *sigh* I'll work on being that white American male thing. Does that mean I have to buy an American car? I hope not, because those suck. [infiniti.com]

                      (I love that damn car)

            • I like games that are either pure luck (Phase 10)

Pure luck? PURE LUCK? You make my victories at Phase 10 feel so cheap. :-)

Seriously though, I think there is a bit of strategy to Phase 10 (deciding how you are going to make Phase), but you are right that for the most part, it is luck.

I can't remember if I've already asked you this, but do you play Skip-Bo? That's a really fun card game too, and when you play 2-player, you can really get some strategy going.

      • My GF is the youngest at just shy of 22

Er.. 23. I really do know how old she is.. and when her birthday is.
        • I'm sure if you contact the right people for only a small fee you can have that post removed.

Either that, or I suppose you can choose which testicle to say good bye to when word gets back to her ;)

She still would like to believe she was freshly 21. She laughs at me when I don't get carded... soon I'll have my payback. Like in another 10 years...

  • I've been learning how to read/write Chinese myself. I was at the library yesterday and noticed a book on reading/writing Japanese and glanced through it. I read each character on the first 10 pages or so and every single one was exactly a chinese character I already knew.

I know the japanese adopted the chinese writing system and then added their own characters, but apparently they didn't add as much as I thought. In fact, I flipped through the whole book and didn't see one character that looked distinc
    • Seems to me if you are going to learn to read/write japanese, you ought to learn chinese first, cause its almost the same (you can obviously skip the spoken chinese, but read/write and speak are different skill sets anyways so that's not a problem).

I'll give you the breakdown on Japanese. Reading and writing is completely different in Japanese and Chinese. You can learn Japanese and understand each Kanji that is used in Chinese, just like you can read Japanese kanji if you know Chinese. However, it lar
