Journal Xerithane's Journal: Vice City: Live Action, or Don't quit your day job. 21

So, with the hopes of spoiling the FortKnox Photo Contest, I'm releasing the Vice City Live Action movie. I think pretty much everyone has established who I am, so I don't feel bad about it.

Vice City: The Pair.

Some people under Windows are experiencing problems downloading it, but under Linux with mplayer or xine it is working just fine. Post your snide comments below.

For Windows Users: Use Quicktime. Thanks to Pirogoeth to pointing that out.

Update: Holy hell, am I really this popular? You guys aren't commenting, but I've gotten quite a few downloads. Shall I take the silence as I suck or no critiques? ^_^

Update of a funny story...
So, if anybody is planning on doing a movie that involves lots of shooting, definitely call the police before hand. Don't worry, we did that. The second point is tell all the neighboring businesses that you are going to be firing a few dozen rounds off. If anybody has experience with 8mm blanks, they're loud. We filmed the shooting scenes on a Saturday afternoon at 4:30 at a location away from open businesses. Or so we thought. We completely forgot about the Land Rover dealer that is behind the parking garage we were filming in. When we were about half way done, two cops pull up (and were very cool) and discuss how unhappy Land Rover is. Land Rover calls the police, the police tell them it's a movie, Land Rover demands the police come down to investigate... which means the police have to come down and investigate. They just ask me to go over and apologize to Land Rover... they were exceptionally pissed, but I apologized and I think they don't wish bad things upon me. Never know...

The moral of the story is wear earplugs while firing blanks, and avoid Land Rover dealers while shooting guns.

  • Pretty slick! What did you make that with?

It runs fine under Windows if you've got Quicktime loaded up.

The camera is a JVC Mini-DV camera, post-production was done with FinalCut Pro and AfterEffects on OS9.

Good to know, thanks for the heads up. I've been trying to get Windows Media Player to play it...
      • Ah, so you're one those non-OSX switchers! ;)

I tried FCP once. Way too complex for what I was using it for. I'm thinking of taking a look at Final Cut Express for my next "feature" instead of iMovie, which while a great app isn't quite all that it can be.

Nah, I'm just the actor. Shawn is the director/producer/post-production/assitant, etc.

FinalCut Pro kicks ass after you get the hang of it. It is insanely complex, but watching Shawn use it was pretty awe inspiring.
      • Has anyone released an mpeg-4 solution for WMP? I've never seen it, but QT works fine for now.

As far as my 5 minutes of googling went, nope. Everything was pointing to standalone players and such.
  • My brother is going to buy Vice City for PC tomorrow. He's a complete GTA3 addict. I have a playstation, but I'm not going to spend 60 on a game. Thank you very much, I'll wait for the Platinum Edition.
    • Way cool dude! Too bad the mp4 is a tad slow at that resolution on my 600Mhz iBook. I even showed it to my brother.

One little citisism though: the time is going on, but the shell count of the gun doesn't go down, but apart from that: excellent :-)

I'll let Shawn know. Thanks :)

I'll post the next movie we do up when it's done, but we're having a hard time finding actors in the area that are willing to do it just for fun... and most of them have attitudes.
        • I wouldn't mind helping out... Did some acting as a student. Actually I had to to a monologue as Fançois Mitterand in a play about European countries (went to the European School, which explains my extremely pro-european standpoints)
Guess, distance won't make me help you out though ;-)

Yeah, I'm thinking flying across the big pond just for a part in a low-budget movie isn't a strong point to come visit.
  • That was a great movie! Reminds me of highschool when we used to make 1970's style kung fu movies (fast forwarded uber moves included :) ). All the movie needs now is females... :)
  • Good fun, my only gripe is the sound (I'm using QT in 2K) There was no sound for the first few seconds which caused me a little confusion and a few false starts :)

So when are you doing a shoot in a titty-bar followed by some mad wheelie action on a nutter sports bike with the Uzis blazing?

That was really pretty good. Actually makes me reconsider my position on the GTA franchise in general. Does it have the same action movie feel your clip had? In that case I might just pick it up when the GameCube port hits the stores..

Even though they are crude, the video game effects were really nice. Poly-count and frame rates weren't an issue but the vanishing body/chalk line thing was cool. I guess credit for this one has to go to Rock Star. Very smooth outfit, but what is the deal with the shoes?

No, the action scenes were our creative license. They do have some creative death shots going on though... like if you shoot someone in the face they grab their face while blood shoots out.

      • Ah--the joys of making a student film. I remember having to make one involving presents. We were to lazy to wrap boxes in nice paper so we substituted them with coloured cubes that were lying around from the photography class. Didn't make the thing any more watch-able (or understandable) but at least we followed the requirements with the leas possible effort. I can't really remember the grade we got, but then who cares about that two years afterwards? Regarding blunders: I hope that I will never have to loo
  • thanks for including that story. i liked the movie. i am one of the few gamers in the world who hasn't played the game, so i can't make any comparisons.

  • Next time encode it in something that doesn't suck down CPU horse power like that, 700mhz should be more than enough to play simple medium res videos like that!
