Comment Wyse cam (Score 3, Informative) 180

Since I have a hunch your looking for something you can have remote storage in case they steal your remote cameras and have separate storage you might look at wise cam. The Wyse cam outdoors I have gone for over 60 days before recharging. There is a base that has local storage and has it own wifi to talk to 4 remote cameras and store it in the base station that could be hidden.

On your other idea they do have a software to flash the unit to do exactly what your was thinking. Dont know if the Outdoor model does that. But a quick search shows this. Good luck.

Why in the world would they be using anything other that their own servers. This is the fricking government, they are supposed to archive all email communications, not just higher up's. This somehow seems to be some sort of diversion. I really have had a hard time believing anything this year. Our government using any outside control, email, storage, offsite processing just blows me away.

So, do you think this is an intended miss step? The way 2020 is, it seems like it was intended.

When I was young, I never thought I would see 2020. Almost wish it was so. Democracy under attack by our OWN president, and supported by so many. I truly hope Biden grows some balls and goes after every person in the senate that is supporting the truly sedition supporting bastard's.

And itâ(TM)s interesting to think that a presidential pardon can only pardon federal crimes. So those state tax evasions and rape cases will move forward. Or so I have been told.

I just read your comments, and feel your pain. The nice thing, is the Starlink is truly portable. No need to find a tower, it locates it connection itself. From what I saw from a unboxing is a low height tripod comes with it. So this is really great for those that need to be more mobile. see this https://ancillary-proxy.atarimworker.io?url=https%3A%2F%2Farstechnica.com%2Finformation-technology%2F2020%2F11%2Fspacex-starlink-beta-tester-takes-user-terminal-into-forest-gets-120mbps%2F

Those of us that have internet in the country now like myself have already paid more than this for setup and operation.

Three years ago my nearest tower was 19.7 miles from my house. To have a solid connection they recommend a 3.2 ghz licensed radio. Which I had to purchase. And 120$ a month rate for 25 mbps unlimited plan. 40 ft pole all installed with radio was 1200$, at least they had 12 month payment plan.

So 500$ self install for 500$ doesn’t seam bad to me. Though I will wait until enough sat’s are up to have uninterrupted connection.

Lusers with gigabit to your house for less than 100$ free install, and complain about a 10$ a month, please do not apply.

You realize this is not a replacement for your in town fiber connection. I have one of the best country wifi connections reaching 20 miles and have typically a 12 ms ping, which is great, which is unlimited. In the country we are lucky to get 50 meg, most places can only offer 25 meg, oh and its 80-120 a month.

Is for us folk that cant get DSL, Fiber, etc. And it blows away the satellite (excede) internet I had before which at best had a 140 ms ping. Oh and you could exceed your cap in a day, then you only get a lousy 500k

I have two locations out in the country which I use two different companies providing internet via PTMP. One location I get 50/5 for 65$ a month, it is about 45 miles from Dallas, and 1/2 mile from tower, costs 70$ a month.

The second is about 45 miles from Austin, there I get 25/5 and have a public IP for vpn. There it is 15 miles from the tower, It cost 117$ a month .

Neither location has any option other than PTMP. Pings are good, usually 8~12 ms at both locations using speedtest, and both locations are not oversubscribed, so 98% of the time I get full advertised speed. Both are unlimited data plans.

But I am interested in Starlink, depends on cost, bandwidth, and can I get a public ip if "desired". It will be interesting none the less, as any competition that drives prices is a help as you can see quite a bit of difference in pricing.

Though a mail list at the moment I did put my location near Austin on the beta test waiting list, and even if the cost of a terminal is 300 I will not bat an eye. My Austin location I paid extra to purchase a licensed 3.2ghz receiver, almost 900$ with install 3 years ago.

Those that live in towns with cable, dsl, fiber, do not appreciate what those of us have to do in the country, and scoff at our "horrible" speeds.

I have a wink lying around somewhere. I switched over to habitat because I wanted local processing capability. The wink hub works really well but was completely Internet sever based automation. If you lost connection to the Internet none of your automation would work correctly. They do have a unbelievable amount of compatibility with devices. But after searching for something similar with local processing I settled on habitat, I have never looked back. Also in larger installations you can have multiple hubs linked. Pretty nifty device.

Submission + - My product development (O'Reilly) now a free download! (oreilly.com)

occamboy writes: I'm psyched that O'Reilly's made my book "Prototype to Product" freely available for download, to help teams developing products in response to COVID-19. It's a high-level cross-functional engineering look at how... well, how prototypes are developed into manufacturable products. Covers electronics, software, mechanicals, manufacturing, project management, regulatory, and so forth. Currently at 4.8 stars on Amazon, and only two of the reviews were by friends of mine :).

Hint: Figure 1-1 is all you really need to know, the rest is details.
