This seems to be a partial mirror. I thought I saw a collection posted to /. back when Mark first announced his assimilation, perhaps someone can dig it up from the /. archive? It is possible the Shrock "bt" collection is that collection.

Germany Fired Up Over Clean Coal 385

MIT's Technology Review is reporting on the world's first coal-driven power plant designed to capture and store C02 emissions. "Vattenfall's small 30-megawatt plant burns the lignite in air from which nitrogen has been removed. Combustion in the resulting oxygen-rich atmosphere produces a waste stream of carbon dioxide and water vapor, three-quarters of which is recycled back into the boiler. By repeating this process, known as oxyfuel, it is possible to greatly concentrate the carbon dioxide. After particles and sulfur have been removed, and water vapor has been condensed out, the waste gas can be 98 percent carbon dioxide, according to Vattenfall. The separated carbon dioxide will be cooled down to -28 C and liquefied. Starting next year, the plan is to transport it by truck 150 miles northwest, to be injected 3,000 meters underground into a depleted inland gas field in Altmark. Ideally, in the future, the gas will be carried by pipeline to underground storage, says Vattenfall. "

Robots Aim To Top Humans At Air Hockey 177

An anonymous reader writes "You probably knew that the Deep Blue supercomputer beats chess masters, and that last weekend a software robot defeated four poker champions. But you may have missed this one: a GE Fanuc robot is taking on humans at air hockey. The robot is powered by a special PC-board that can instantly switch between 8-bit and its 32-bit modes. The 8-bit version lost to most human players, but the 32-bit microcontroller has defeated even the best human air hockey players by a ratio of three to one."

Feed Protein May Be Linked To Melanoma Recurrence (sciencedaily.com)

Higher levels of a protein called S-100 in melanoma patients may correlate with a higher risk of the disease returning, say researchers. The study tested serum samples from 103 patients treated with high-dose interferon an average of eight years prior. When the researchers examined levels of S-100 in the samples, they found that the higher the level of the protein, the greater likelihood the disease had returned.

Feed Russia's Precambrian Layer Hides The Riddle Of The Earth's Oxygen (sciencedaily.com)

Two geologists from the Geological Survey of Norway will drill into 2.5 to 2 billion year-old rocks in Russia to seek to understand the interaction between geological processes that created the "modern Earth." The increase of oxygen in the atmosphere marked the very beginning of the "modern Earth" as it functions today. The rocks from the birth of the "modern Earth" have isotopic and chemical signatures that contain proof of dramatic events like the break-up of continents, volcanism and repeated global ice ages or the "Snowball Earth."

Feed Start School Later In The Morning, Say Sleepy Teens (sciencedaily.com)

A survey of sleep-deprived teens finds they think that a later start time for school and tests given later in the school day would result in better grades. The survey of 280 high school students confirmed what most parents with a teenager know: they are not getting enough sleep.

Submission + - MSFT's SUSE coupons have no expire date

mw13068 writes: In a recent article in the Seattle Post Intelligencer FSF General Council Eben Moglen points out: "The [Microsoft SUSE] coupons have no expiration date, and Microsoft can be sure that some coupons will be turned into Novell in return for software after the effective date of GPL 3. Once that has happened, patent defenses will, under the license, have moved out into the broad community and be available to anybody who Microsoft should ever sue for infringement."

Groklaw is also covering the story in it's inimitable way.

Feed Bruce Willis: iChat user, forum troll (engadget.com)

What do you when you've got millions of dollars, no steady day job, and plenty of vocal critics that do their best to berate you knowing full well that they could never do your job if given the chance? We might just ask Bruce Willis that very question, but thankfully for all us, he's already responded. Apparently, Mr. Willis not only finds his way around internet message boards that focus on his films, but he doesn't hesitate to join in on the oftentimes testy conversations and give users his platinum-laced two cents. In a recent go 'round in regard to Die Hard 4, Bruce was caught mouthing off to disbelievers and carpers alike, and while a select few were adamant that this so-called Walter B. was little more than an overzealous fanboy, Bruce did the honorary thing and offered to prove it. The actor actually requested that a fellow iChat / Mac user hit him up for a momentary video chat in order to show his face, and sure enough, the most vocal doubter was indeed put in place rather quickly. Big fan of the ego, Bruce.
