Submission + - Blizzard announces Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft "Card Game" (playerattack.com)

UgLyPuNk writes: Blizzard has revealed its "something new" at PAX East 2013: Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft — a "charming collectible strategy game set in the Warcraft universe."We've been working on a little something, different from our other games, and we're pleased to invite you to be the first to see it. It's not a sequel, expansion or that rumored next-gen MMO, but it's something we're excited for you to get your hands on."

Submission + - Australian R18+... not yet, NSW Refuses to vote (reddit.com)

UgLyPuNk writes: Just a few hours after the Australian gaming public was confused by the stance taken by the South Australian Attorney-General, they’re now getting angry over his New South Wales counterpart’s decision.

While the Standing Committee of Attorneys-General had planned on making a decision regarding the introduction of an R18+ rating for video games on Friday at a meeting in Adelaide, the NSW Attorney-General has announced he will not vote on the topic at this time.

Submission + - Garry's Mod catches pirates the fun way (gamepron.com)

UgLyPuNk writes: A few hours ago, Garry Newman – the creator of Garry’s Mod – asked, quite innocently, whether anyone was unable to shade polygon normals.

He received a few comments, mostly jokes, but a quick look at Google suggests that there are indeed a few people who are experiencing problems with their game.

you can hear Newman’s chuckling from here. Not the normal response to a wide-spread bug report, but this is no normal bug. It seems that the developer has deliberately enabled an error in GMod, which will only affect people who have pirated the game.

Submission + - Sony reveals the Next Generation Portable Console (gamepron.com)

UgLyPuNk writes: Of course it’s not called the PSP2, because that would be too obvious and straightforward for the games industry. For the moment, at least, you’ll be looking forward to news about the NGP – the Next Generation Portable. That is apparently just a codename, but who knows – it just might stick!

Submission + - Optical Camouflage puts Kinect into stealth mode (gamepron.com)

UgLyPuNk writes: Takayuki Fukatsu, a Japanese coder who works under the name Art & Mobile, has done a bit of trickery with Kinect and openFrameworks. The peripheral will still track your movement and position, but turns your image nearly transparent. Take a look (it’s particularly obvious at about 1:30):

Submission + - Viacom to sell Rock Band creators Harmonix (gamepron.com)

UgLyPuNk writes: We’re expecting more details soon, but in a conference call today, Viacom have announced that they are selling Rock Band creator Harmonix.

They explain that the unit is “unprofitable”, despite collecting third-party royalties from the Guitar Hero franchise, and are already in talks with several potential buyers for the developer. Last year, Viacom recorded a $230 million “goodwill impairment charge” for Harmonix, and significantly wrote down assets for the Rock Band franchise.

Submission + - typewriter hacked to play Zork, responds to typing

UgLyPuNk writes: Typewriters that can type by themselves are one thing. Typewriters that can type by themselves and play Zork are totally different – the stuff that dreams are made of (at least the dreams of little girls who spent hours in front of a Commodore 64 telling the machine to GO NORTH and such).

Submission + - StarCraft II cost $100 million to develop (gamepron.com)

UgLyPuNk writes: Video game production is in a slump, the world’s struggling with the tail-end of the Global Financial Crisis, and Activision Blizzard has spent more than US$100 million developing StarCraft II.

The sequel’s been 12 years coming, and expectations are understandably high, with analysts predicting several million units will be sold this year alone – comfortably padding Activision‘s wallet.

Crime

Submission + - Chinese Internet Addiction Boot Camp Prison Break (gamepron.com)

UgLyPuNk writes: A group of inmates at the Huai’an Internet Addiction Treatment Centre decided they’d had enough of the “monotonous work and intensive training”. Working together, they tied their duty supervisor to his bed and made a run for it. The 14 patients, aged from 15 to 22, hailed a taxi to take them to a nearby town – but were uncovered when the driver took them to the police station instead, suspicious of the identically-dressed young men who were unable to pay the fare.

Submission + - Mobile game trojan calls the South Pole (gamepron.com) 1

UgLyPuNk writes: Freeware games can actually cost you more money than their pay-to-play cousins, as mobile gamers in the UK have learned. A “booby-trapped” version of a popular Windows Mobile game has been sneakily spending their money while they sleep – by dialling phone numbers in the Antarctic behind their backs.

Submission + - Mass Effect to invade the big screen (gamepron.com)

UgLyPuNk writes: This could be a good thing or a bad thing EA have just confirmed that they’re making Mass Effect into a movie. The franchise has been acquired by Legendary Pictures, who are best known for their co-productions of The Dark Knight, Clash of the Titans, 300, Watchmen and, um, The Hangover, as part of their co-financing agreement with Warner Bros.

Submission + - Call of Duty: Black Ops announced (gamepron.com) 1

UgLyPuNk writes: Is anyone other than Activision doing anything in the games industry these days? In amongst all the lawsuits and signings, they’ve just found the time to announce the latest in one of the world’s best-selling franchises: Call of Duty: Black Ops is due to hit shelves November 9th.

Submission + - Fallout 3 - Edited version to hit Australian shelv (on.net)

UgLyPuNk writes: "Just last week, we told you that Fallout 3 had been resubmitted to the Classifications Board, in the hope that it would be deemed suitable for Australian audiences. While the Classificaions Board can take between a few days and a few weeks to hand down their decision — it seems that the edits made to the Bethesda Softworks title have been successful, with the second edition of the game granted a new MA15+ rating this afternoon. We don't yet have the details of the decision, but are currently finding out just what was changed in the game in order to secure the new rating — and release in this country."
